I know I've seen something on spark plugs around here somewhere but I'll be damned if I can find it meow, even with a search (such a noob). What kind of plugs should I get for the 4.0 RENIX? I think I remember someone saying xjs don't like fancy plugs but don't know the preferred brand/style.
NGK Coppers.

And, the thread is now in OEM Tech.

Got lights and rack installed. Wife is jealous that my little iron pig got a "boob job". She calls it my iron mistress.

Took the bumper off to do the front lights and found 2 hide-a-key boxes! Scored 2 more sets of keys. Oot oot

That's funny.

I got a parts Jeep with no door keys. Was stripping the marker lights and such off of it and found hide-a-keys in there!!

Painted the fenders and rockers this weekend. Went with Krylon Super Maxx Black Satin. A bunch of light coats and it turned out great. Tons of prep.

Things that made this project easy: Pre-taped plastic masking sheeting. Paint gun attachment for spray cans. I cannot put enough emphasis on how awesome this little $5 piece of equipment is, if you are using rattle cans. And I used the pre-taped masking sheet by applying roughly, close to where the true mask line would be, then using a roll of green masking tape to make the lines clean.

Received a set of 746 injectors from our friendly neighborhood Programbo! Gonna put 'em in tonight, if the local napa has a set of quick-connects... don't want to run into trouble if one breaks.

Also installed a set of aircraft safety style toggle switches, for the off-road lights. Was not satisfied with the stock switches. Very satisfied with the safety toggles. Tips light up green. The covers are thick plastic and the springs are very strong.

Doing my Injectors and cleaning the TB this weekend... might tackle the hood vents. I have a pair that are painted and ready to go, just gotta get then guts to cut into the hood.

Hey Cruiser, check your PM. I have a question about an ECU swap. Please.

... guess I can just post it too. I have an 87, Automatic. Was reading a thread about more power and better operation from upgrading to a newer ECU. I found a couple of options on PartsGeek but want to make sure it is the right part before dropping $$. Two manufacturers... Standard and Cardone.... any preference? Here is a link to the parts. The top two choices are for Automatic.

I was considring this swap as well for my 87 and had similar or the same question. (probably for cruiser?)

Is there a way to tell what year an ECU comes from? Say if I got one from the junkyard? (for double checking against the year of the XJ) How about for the TCU, is there a date code or something?

Thanks

You have a really low threshold for coffee. I also like mine without pubes.

I searched ECU for 1990, since I figured a 1990 would not accept an ECU from an 87. Not sure if this is sound logic.

Here is the thread that got me thinking about doing this:

I think this might answer it. Looking closer, Cruiser states "8953005428 or 8953005429 for sure.", in the "more power" thread.

One of the parts I found is Oe. #53005428. It is only lacking the 89 at the front and the description says compatible with '90 Automatic 4.0l.

When I search for '87 ECU, I come up with a lot more results. It gets narrower with '89 and '90, leading me to believe the one I am looking at is the newer unit. (heehee I said unit)

I just found a less expensive one at O'Reilly. Cardone, Reman part #79-5406. Might have it in my area, in stock too.

Update: I did some more looking and researching and came to the conclusion the Oh Really one is indeed a RMF 1990... not in stock but $112, including core charge and free shipping was better than most re-manufactured I have found, so I went for it. Should have it Tuesday or Wednesday. That will give me a couple days to drive with the new injectors and cleaned TB so I can observe any gains incrementally. Or if I F something up, I can narrow it down easier.
