Default Blower Motor out?

I have done a little bit of research already and just want to confirm what I have found. As of lately when i turn my heat on ((has to be on High for it to work) That would be because of a faulty resistor, Right?) there was something behind the dash that would just growl at me and sounded absolutely terrible, mainly like something wasn't spinning smoothly, like a bearing maybe? It sounded like it was coming from right behind the glove box. But on my 3 hour trip through the tundra of what is known as Iowa it went out on me. So i have no heat on any setting what so ever. I am pretty sure that it is the heater blower motor that had went out on me. I am just wondering if this sounds about right? Any Ideas, and if so, is it something I can replace myself?

Bump. I'm not that knowledgeable on how electricity works and fuses and all that. But I did notice that when I engaged the heat that it would draw quite some power. Could a fuse have blown to result in this? Maybe it was working too hard and drew too much power?

I would really appreciate if someone with a working blower resistor could put a multimeter on it and post how many ohms the actually resistor is.

I'm also having problems with my heat on the 95 XJ. I felt the switch might be bad as there was intermittent fan op on all speeds.

I went to the junk yard in search of a controller and what I found scared the daylights out of me.

I pulled 5 controllers and only 1 was what I considered useable, even though it is questionable.

I saw controllers that were melted, and burned at the connector on the back of the switch! This indicates a potential fire hazard and in fact there are incidents of fires starting there.

Why are they burning? Could be dirty connectors, fan getting old drawing too much current, connectors worn from vibration.

I am going to err on the side of safety with mine and spend a little money.

I will be replacing the Fan, Switch, Resistor Pack and also looking at the wiring harness to insure it has not suffered any heat damage.

I figure the new fan will not draw as much current as an old one, new switch will have better contacts, and well the resistor pack just for good measure.

Don't be surprised if you get behind your controller and see some things that look scary.

Howdy,

well, I can tell you from past experience with the blower motor (91 xj), mine went out at the worst of times, in n. va in the winter when it was 3 degrees out and i had to get to work, soooooooooo, long story short.

the fan before it died was screeching and howling like crazy......

turns out the bearing and rust had basically seized it up and the cage assy was being shredded.

so went to junkyard, pulled one out of another cadaver donator xj and also took the resistor pack.

been working ok since.

if yer gonna fix it, get both parts....if you want new, i think rockauto.com might have them, dealer usually does, but junkyard is a good place to try first.

hope it helps!

^Had the same symptoms in mine ^

But just a few weeks ago mine had totally went out after it was squealing and barking at me. I checked the fuse and that was not only the wrong one inserted, but it was blown replaced it and it kicked on again, but only at the off and high settings (it was like that before also). I then replaced the resistor with a 6-8 dollar one from advanced and then I had a working system at all settings. I then replaced the motor with a new one from autozone and took the squirrel cage off the old one and tossed it back on the new. It has worked fine for me ever since.

If You need help doing any of the work, I took some pictures in hope of doing a write up. But then I realized that it was the simplest job of all time. But still if you want to see some pictures I have them if you need a reference.

To remove the heater motor, remove the screen washer bottle then remove the 3 bolts holding the blower motor to the bulkhead, disconnect the power connector to it.
