It is time to cut off my old cracked, mangled battery cable terminals and put on some new ones. Having a little trouble finding anything that accepts 2 cables like the stock terminals. (My stock battery cabling is 4 GA and 6 GA?)

Anybody have any favorite replacement styles? Military style? Quick Cable Compression Connector? Something else?

I do have an impact crimper and a small sledge hammer for crimping ends. Would be nice to leave the cables in the Jeep, but I don't think I am getting around pulling them all out and cleaning everything up.

I'm not a fan for the type where you bolt the cables down into the connector, not even those blingy gold ones that the sound guys seem to be fond of.

I get the clear heat shrink on the ends so I can see what's going on under the shrink. Corrosion is bad. Hidden corrosion is much worse.

 

I liked both when I was browsing and never heard of clear heat shrink, need to look into that! Replacing the cables is not in the cards for me just yet, but already know that my local big welding shops do not sell cable by the foot, or if they do it is very limited.

If I go military connectors, or Quick Cable, will source them through my local Granger.

 

i did military posts for the ease of attaching to them. I have found myself wanting to add busbars instead, but as just a replacement post clamp the military are a nice option. they are handy to jump to or run compressor off of, really just an easy amount of quick connection points.

I have some in my Amazon cart now, along with some crimp terminals and weatherproof red and black shrink tube. Was going to get the posts from Grainger, but they didn't have the pos and neg from the same maker. Go figure.

Now i need to scout out how to get it all undone enough to pull it out from under the Jeep enough to crimp the ends on with a sledge hammer.

 

I got my terminals at napa if you just want two of the same. Also you can solder the new eyelets vs crimp. Probably not too easy to cut while in the jeep, but it's doable lol.

But that is only because I could not find any 45 or 90 degree ones locally. Don't know why.
They helped tighten up things.
I did buy the heatshrink and the braided covering from the link in the thread.
The braided covering was overkill but I liked how it looked.
The clear heatshrink is interesting.
I crimped instead of soldered. Went back and forth on that for awhile though.
HF crimper and I cut them like guys did in the YouTube videos I watched.

Pretty much decided on welding cable for when/if that time comes. But around here, as far as I can tell, I'll be ordering that from an online source. I don't plan on changing from stock. Even going to be pulling out the old wiring from 22 year old bumper lights that did not survive nine months of driving on I-81.

 

Crimping for this stuff seems to be the way to go. I've posted this video here before, Holley made the case to me that crimp is the better connection for most automotive applications.

My heavy duty crimper is the style they sell at welding places and you smack it with a big hammer. Harbor Freight doesn't carry them anymore.

I really like these, but not seeing a clean way to put both wires onto the same lug. If I could solve that puzzle, then I would not need to drag the wire out for ballistic crimping.

Little problem, they want to make it difficult to become a customer and it is a little hard to find their gear online.

 

Also, just want to double check. The stock cabling on a 1996 XJ is 4 GA on the fat cables and 6 GA on the slimmer cables?

Except it looks like they only sell battery cable by the 500' minimum. So, if I ever get to completely changing out my battery cables, will be searching elsewhere.

And a bit of oddness with their shopping cart system. It is not keyed to my account. Made some selections and had a good cart when I left work. Got home and logged on, nothing in my cart. Their response:

The cart does time out after awhile so if you went on a different computer it would not be there unfortunately.

Weird, I don't know of another vendor that I have used in years that does that.
