reverse not working

reverse not working
Hi i have a jeep Cherokee 05 petrol.
recently i have been struggling to put it in reverse and have had to force it in which make the whole gear box sort of jolt the last time it reversed but a horrible smell came from gear box i haven't used it since could anyone help with diagnoses. thanks
