I found a set of 4:10 axles from a 1994 2.5L XJ to swap out my 3:55s in my 1992 XJ due to taller tires/lift.

Both rears are ChryCo 8 3/4 and fronts are of course the Dana 30.

My 1992 has the NP242 Select-Trac and the donor has the 231 TC. I'm finding different part numbers for things like the front axles and such. Even within the same years.

Is there a difference between the 242 and 231 models as far as the D30 parts?

I thought I could just do a hardware refresh on the 4:10 axles and swap em out. Now I'm finding different part numbers for the different transfer cases..

I had new u-joints installed in my front axle shafts about 3 years ago and would like to just swap the axle stubs and my fairly new hub bearings to the 94 D30.

Anyone know if they are indeed able to use the same parts??

As far as drivetrain you can swap XJ parts out easily, especially if they're same like you have. It's why you can go to the junkyard and pull axle shafts from a 96 and older C8.25 and they'll fit any other 27 spline C8.25. Good luck

My guess with the different parts numbers would be u joints and anything associated with where the front DS meets the TC. Having a different TC would change mating and what not. This is just a guess

hope that helps

I'm thinking that the different part numbers have something to do with the vacuum-disconnect on some D30 axles. I guess the full-time jeeps (NP242 tcase) didn't have the vacuum disconnect at all. Just the 321s did. That appears to be the part that's throwing all the part locator/crossovers off.

I don't think the 1994 D30 will have the vac disco will it?? I cannot remember the cut-off year or of they had one. My 1984 XJ did.. I ended up removing the disco and using a hose-clamp to keep the collar always "on".

No biggie.. Maybe a cheap locker if it DOES have the vac-disco. Sort of win I guess..

Just do this to the front axle if it's disconnect.

The transfer case does not affect driveshaft or axle from 1991 and later. 1990 and earlier had different axle housing--vacuum disconnect on the D30 with NP231, plain D30 with NP242--but the vac disco was discontinued in 1991 on the XJ (the YJ kept it through the end of production). Front driveshaft part numbers are determined by engine and transmission models (both affect the physical position of the transfer case), but not for the transfer case itself.

ps--there is a sticky on NAXJA for front driveshafts http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthrea...#post246203211

Ok.. Axles are now home with me after the 700+ mile drive today. I'm whooped.

Anywho, I found out that an XJ D30 is an XJ D30 no matter what. I will just move/replace everything from my 92 over to the 94 axle that needs to be moved if different.

Will start the transplant tomorrow after work. Removing the existing 3:55 axles from my '92 and cleaning/freshening the new '94 4:10s. HOPEFULLY by early next week, I can start the install.

Off to order new parts.. The ol' bank account is taking a hit for sure, but overall it will be cheaper than regearing my stock tubes. AND I will get fresh steering parts in the process.

axle swaps
This will be great. 4.10's will be such a great improvement for your XJ. you will be cruising right along with traffic and wheeling will be great. I can't believe what a difference it made when I swapped my 3.07's to 3.55 the same way.
