Hello my fellow XJ peeps....
I'm about to do a drain and fill of my trans. Believe it or not I actually have my original owner's manual.... do ya'll use what is stated in that? or something else that is really good and will not harm the trans?
It's not super dirty, just at the point of needing to be replaced.
Do you just drain, fill and go for it.... or a series of drain and fills? If so which method and how many quarts overall?
TIA !

Drain and fill every 30K miles for normal duty.
Use the correct fluid as noted above. Have a gallon of it on hand.
It takes 3.646194 quarts.
Or, just follow the instructions on the dipstick.
Start with 3 quarts and add as needed.

Yep, like he said... Dex/Mercron 3. You aren't going to get the old fluid out of the torque converter. It will dilute into the fresh fluid and get filtered through the new screen.
I would go with the full synthetic ATF fluid, its WAY better than the basic cheap fluid. Worth every penny.

This is very simple and what the factory recommended.
30,000 mile intervals for normal service and 15,000 miles for severe service.
Severe service is postal delivery, constant towing, taxi etc.
NO interval to change the screen!! Leave that alone.
If you want something to fret about, buy a new drain plug washer and install it before reinstalling the plug.

Dex III/Merc.
Consider doing a forward flush- happy to provide instructions. Can do it yourself, changes all the fluid including what's in TC and be done with it.

Listen to cruiser54 about first getting a new drain plug washer BEFOREhand. I didn't know that the washer would be eaten up and in the end tried using a generic washer I ended up stripping the drain pain threads. Needed to get a new drain pan installed.
