not really. The only time you really hear of them dying is if someone puts the wrong fluid in it. The AW4 is a very good transmission, Many people on here have 200k+ on original motors/trans and wheel the hell out of them. Only trans put into a cherokee that is really a problem is the BA 10.
My renix had 210k on it and still shifted nice and firm. My new 97 has 274k on it with original motor/trans.

Mine is going strong. Treat it to a new filter, cleaned out pan, and fresh fluid, give it a trans cooler out in front of the rad. Use 4Lo in your Tcase when pullin or givner in goo or steep territory. Don't go jammin gears and gettin rammy. It is a great trans, treat it right and it will treat you to miles and miles of service. Really one of the most impressive trans I've know.

Good eye, it is an SRT Cherokee and does 180, in 4 Lo.
Actuall 481 kilometers, still that's runnin over 298000 miles.
And the low oil pressure doesnt overload the AW4 when she's doin 180 on our favourite trail, lol

Canada is in a metric world, there is always a politician you didn't elect willing to deligate decisions to a beaurocrat who will be happy to tell you what's good for you and shove fool decisions down your throat.
I still think in miles, inches, pounds, gallons etc., work in both, now isn't that efficient.
180kph is about 110mph, 5 bar pressure is about 72 psi, 100 deg C about 210 deg F
1km about .62 mile

Fwiw ANY tranny can burn out if overused. Very rare to see a junk AW4. Heat is the number one killer of automatic transmissions. Overused is the wrong word. Abused is the correct word.

Heat kills automatic transmissions.
Keep the heat down, install an external cooler depending on how you use it, CHANGE the fluid frequently and you will get a nice long life out of your AW4.

I bought a '91 as a trade in from a dealer before cheap, the people that traded it in told me it would only drive until it warmed up then no gears at all. I saw the hard lines were crushed shut, so I replaced them, changed the fluid and filter and it drove for years after that. I think thats proof that these are very durable transmissions.
