242 shift into 2 wheel problems
I am in the home stretch of a multi-week project on my heap. I have changed out my axle for a LSD which has new clutches and bearings. I have done rust repair and some prevention. I also found a JY 242 TC which I put a Novak rebuild kit with new bearings and chain.
The shift forks looked fine and I also changed shifters so mine now has a 242 shifter. I bench tested and everything worked well with easy shifting between the modes. The jeep is on jack stands. I have adjusted the shifter multiple times now with the TC in 4 low and moving the shifter to the correct position. With the jeep running the TC will shift into all modes but will not shift into 2wd although neutral does not seem to be in the correct postion. I do not know if it is because it is in the air or if it is in the adjustment of the shifter or something internal.
Opinions and suggestions are very welcomed.

Just on the stands. I put the tires back on thinking some mass n the drive train might make a difference but I still could not convince it to go into 2 wheel.
I am almost finished with what I wanted to do and am thinking that driving it on the road could " loosen" it a bit. I just am not comfortable with trying to force things to work even though from what I have read the 242 is notorious for this issue.
This has been a frustrating project as the heap has fought with every bolt and part. For example, I removed the gas tank so I could do some rust removal and painting. I simply set the tank aside and did not touch it. On the reinstall I now have a leak coming from the top of the tank from somewhere on the fuel pump.
I hand to walk away for awhile.
I guess if it were easy everyone would have a 15 year old Cherokee.

put some vice grips on the linkage pivot and push it into two wheel drive.
the linkage bushings get some slop/play in them and just flex when trying to get into 2-drive, Bushings are cheap at the dealer.
You can get the almost complete package. That's what we did, Our 99 was locked up like coral.
I just left the grips on till the weather warms and get to the swap...
