ZJ Backing Plates Part Number?
Doing a XJ drum to disk conversion. After much reading and video viewing, “how to” is clear. Thanks to all that have provided write-ups!
But, going the route of purchasing backing plates vs a salvage yard pull, finding the right backing plate manufacturer name/part number is proving a bit difficult. For example, O’Rielly has different backing plates available vs Doorman.
The OEM sites typically just state that the OEM part is “no longer available.”
Hoping that a forum member that has done this can provide manufacturer name and part number for the ZJ retainer plates that can be used for a 1988 XJ Dana 44 drum to disk conversion.
If it matters, the Dana 44 is being installed in a 91’ Cherokee.
If I iunderstand correctly, backing plates from a 1994 - 1998 ZJ can be used for the conversion by expanding the center opening with [tool of choice... dremel, CNC machine, a trained beaver, etc]. In addition, new holes must be drilled in a retainer plate to match the retainer bolt pattern in the Dana 44.
A couple of examples...
Currie Enterprises CE-6036: Currie Disc Brake Backing Plates. These are uber expensive!
Crown Automotive 4762128/29K Backing Plate Assembly Kit for 93-98 Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ with Dana 35 Rear Axle. For this one, does “...with Dana 35 Rear Axle” matter at all? Is the center hole so small that opening it up will weaken the plate (from being too close to the original mounting holes)?
Really wish to avoid purchasing the $600 kit.

44 is a different animal when it comes to disc conversion. Not like a 35 or 8.25. Way more complicated.

Please provide an example. I must get this done. I have a fully rebuilt Dana 44 with a brand new Detroit Truetrac sitting idle just because I am trying to figure out this brake conversion. Sucks! The NickInTimesFilms guy has a complete break down of the conversion. Outside of the parking brake, what is so different?
