One day I'll pluck up the courage to see if I can make one good (well, working) one out of my 2 242's.
My '98 was always noisy & difficult to engage/disengage 4WD. I knew enough to know it wasn't right but not enough to do anything about it. Then one day the chain made a bid for freedom but still managed to get it the 30-odd miles home. Swapped in the TC from my parts '96 & all seemed OK - but I'd obviously messed up with the mode switch because the first time I actually needed 4WD there was a clonk & I had nothing, not even Park. went home on a rollback but all I needed to do was turn that switch maybe 1/2 a turn, something under tension freed off &, lo & behold - I had a fully functioning 231! Eventually it got the 242 from my '99 (awaiting a new trans) & all is well. However one day I'll want to fix the '99 & as TC's are about £400 a throw here, I'll have the incentive to use the good bits of the one that thinks it's a 231 to repair the '98's original, which can either be re-united with it - or put in the '99.
if none of that works, at least I'll have learned something - hopefully.
