Default Swapping transfer cases...

I know it has been discussed time and time again. Yet through all my research I cant find the answer to my question. I'm getting a steal on a new case that I'm going to put a SYE on. I have a 96 XJ with a NP231 case. The case I'm getting is a NP231 case from a 95 ZJ...will this swap work? Both are 23 spline inputs, 27 spline outs. From what I heard the AW4's from a ZJ may be clocked differently? I would have thought not. can anyone confirm this? better yet any advice or things to consider? i.e driveshafts etc...

The clocking pattern is the same between the XJ and ZJ.

This is gonna come down to the manufacture date on the 95 transfer, a later production should have the same input gear length which iirc is .840". You'll have to measure to be sure..

Even if the trannys are clocked differently, that has no effect on the transfer case (i.e. the bolt pattern is rotated on the tranny, not the x-fer case). I am totally unsure, but I have seen some non-XJs that have a different front shaft yolk styles (but in my mind this was associated with the NP242, not the 231), so I would just visually verify that your DS will attach to the new x-fer case.

And here is a good resource for transfer case knowledge:

Good chance it'll bolt in but measure the inputs first. BTW the ZJ only had the AW4 in 93 then it got the 42RE. As for the drive shaft, the difference is on the axle end, t-case has the same yoke.
