Just picked up a 95 w its share of issues, one being the transfer case sounds like its been grenaded. will any NP231 any year fit?, rebuild kit is over 100 w/out a fork. I have a line on a complete unit out of a comanchee, he says its 21 spline. will that fit?

 

What engine and trans do you have? the 4.0 and AW4 combo should be 23 spline on the input shaft. 21 spline cases came out of 4 cylinder jeeps. The case would be the same you will have to swap over your input shaft to get it to work. It is a pain to do (the whole case has to come apart) but, I'm sure there is a write up here or on another site that can get you through step buy step.

 

The spline count changed in 1991 and has nothing to do with engine size.

This is what I was thinking:

The AW4 had 21 splines through 1990. In 1991 (the same year the 4.0 HO was introduced) the AW4 splines increased to 23.
