Default T Case questions

I have a bad np231 internal output shaft transfer case on my 95 with an automatic trans. I believe my chain stretched and destroyed the gears. I am having trouble finding one for sale that isn't 1k and would be fine with a used one but apparently, that's just about impossible.
My questions are:

Can I use a np231 with a external output shaft and if so what if any modifications would I have to do to accommodate?

Will a Jeep Wrangler YJ 87-95 231 J Transfer Case 23 Spline Input Automatic fit? I see one that says "long input"?

Does anyone have something that will work somewhat close to Southern California, I will travel to pick it up if so.

I don't know enough about t cases and need more info please. Thanks for any help I've been looking for way too long and am losing my mind lol.

Look for a 231j from any 96-2001 jeep xj. They came with a sealed output shaft vs the open slip seal that your jeep has currently. This way if/when you remove your rear driveshaft - you don't lose any fluid 😉

These are not hard to come by at all. Marketplace, Craigslist or even car-part should help you find one locally for a better price than the $1k your talking about.

Typically $100-$200 range is acceptable from my area around Michigan. Maybe $300~ for one rebuilt, upwards from there is a rip-off imo

This was just a quick search using Los Angeles 90001 zip code. Not surprised prices are a little steeper out west vs the Midwest.

Yes. The rubber boot cqn be clamped to your existing slip yoke. Itbis there just to keep the dirt/debris from getting between the splines of the output and your dshaft

'97 up has different electrical connectors & the switches are different & go in different places, they'll work but a little care is needed.

There isn't any difference in lengths or anything and it will bolt right in? Sorry I am asking so many questions I have just been at this for way too long and want to make sure it will work.

Speedo sensor is easily swapped out for year specific plug/sensor. Only other sensor is the mode switch which again if its plug/year specific that can be swapped for year specific plug.

There is an input spline count break around 91/92 -91 older is 21 spline, 92 and up are 23 spline. There is an input length difference between the xj and zj. Zj is longer and will interfere with mounting to the back of your aw4. Again - stick to a 96+ 231j. The only other tcase you may come across out of an xj is a 242j (has a part time 4wd option) which can be argued better/worse than the 231j.

Trouble I encountered with the mode switch (is that really what it's called? never known anyone refer to it by name before) when I swapped a '96 TC into a '98 was not only are the connections different , so are the number of wires and the switches are different lengths & fit in different places, although the thread's the same. Personally, with the benefit of hindsight, I'd just use the shorter switch & accept the lights won't work - as they probably don't anyway.

Alright guys thank you for your input, I put the T case in last night and ran into zero major issues. All I had to do was swap the speedo gear plug. Everything lined up perfectly and works great!

I think id crack it open then give jb conversions a call for a rebuild kit..

Id be leary of buying one that also needs a rebuild.

ounce cracking it open you might find it doesnt need much

Theres also the wide chain kit you could toss in for 349

All ours have NP242, and I bought a couple for $125 each

I insulted a local owner with an offer of $30 for one he had advertised that "needed an overhaul", I think he wanted over $100,
I was going to use it to school myself on them but the ungrateful ***** rejected my offer, shame as he was 5mins up the road, bet its a boat anchor now

learned how to rebuild an auto transmission the same way
