I'm admittedly not much of a wizard when it comes to clutches and trans. I was driving today (thankfully near my house) and went to downshift from 3rd to 2nd and it wouldn't go until 2nd. I noticed there wasn't much in the clutch pedal and whether quick thinking or sheer luck, just as I came to a stop and started to roll backwards a bit I caught reverse and had to drive backwards home. There was no getting it out of reverse so I let it stall out in the driveway. My XJ isn't driven much and was a rebuild (I bought from a custom shop) 27k miles ago. A new clutch was on the build sheet but idk if they did the cylinder (or if it's required to do the clutch, idk). What's anyone's those on what I'm looking at here?

Sounds like you just lost the hydraulic side, which is the much better problem. I bet your trans and clutch are ok. You could probably get by just replacing the slave cylinder and lines, but you may want to consider doing the master too. The nice thing about doing both is you can bleed the whole system on the bench with the the slave higher up than the master so you know you get the air out. I have a thread on upgrading the master:

Good luck!
