What rear axle do you have now, and what do you plan on using you keep for?

I have 37 Pit Bull Rockers on my stock 30 & 8.8. Wheeled it pretty hard last weekend. It held up pretty good.

+1

Went to a 44 here. Paid mucho dinero.

Change your ratios, get chromoly axles, put in an LSD or a locker and call it a day.

Yes the 30 has a carrier break, all you have to do is get a carrier for a 3.73 and up gearset.

I believe that is correct...

http://www.differentials.com/technic...arrier-breaks/

"These are typical carrier breaks with the gear ratio range.

Dana 30 3.55 and down, 3.73 and up"

Yes correct, the Dana 30 has a carrier break. My Cherokee came with 30/35 and I swapped the rear for a 8.25 the first week I owned the jeep. I picked up an 8.25 with Disc brake conversion, 4.10s and a lunchbox locker already installed for $450. The front I purchased a new carrier and matching gears.

I only run 33s and am currently working on strengthening my front Dana 30. If your Cherokee is a 96 or newer you have the larger 760x joints which are the same as a 44. I'm currently working on sleeving my dana 30, gusset the Cs and do the almost alloy kit from Iron Rock Offroad. At the same time I'm doing a WJ brake conversion. Later Im going to add an ARB and move to 4.88s.

If all your going to do is run 33s, that would give you plenty of strength up front.

With that 96' its also possible you have a high pinion vs the weaker low pinion? With all the oddly worded info on the interwebs, is not clear to me on when Mopar incorporated the Dana 30 HPs. But it kind of looks like 1996 - 1999???

They didn't start putting the low pinion in the XJs until 2000.

My 96 is a high pinion. Jeep stopped using the High pinion in 00 on the Cherokee so if you are going to do an axle swap the best years are the 95-99. The are high pinion, the larger 760x U joints, and do not have an axle disconnect.

Some good info can be found at http://www.fourwheeler.com/how-to/tr...ee-axle-guide/
