Exactly the way ima do it. it would look really nice if done with some black PVC like dukies, but if I can make one as easy and as cheap as some sewer hose from walmart, ima do it

Those are very common items, they're called intake pre-cleaners. Their primary use is to funnel the air into a vortex so the centrifugal forces throw higher mass particles out before they get to the filter, aside from a rain cap for the inlet. There are many different types but extremely common in agricultural and construction equipment filtration systems for the high dust environment.

Donaldson and Enginaire sell some really efficient ones.

I've read others report that moving the air intake so that it runs from passenger side of cowl (with a cone filter in the cowl) (and eliminating stock air box completely) does result in increased cabin noise.

Does running the air intake from the driver side of the cowl to the rear of the stock air box and using regular / normal air filter (and blocking the original front entrance to the stock air box) increase the noise inside the cab?

I haven't done this yet, but my theory would be yes to both, but I would also assume it's not as loud when using the factory air box. the air box I designed to eliminate some noise. even putting a cold air intake or short ram intake (which run nowhere near the cabin) on a vehicle will increase cabin noise because you completely eliminate all of the sound dampening effects of the stock system. honestly I cant imagine its much louder than the main fan on the XJ and even if it is it'll be a nice little growl when you're speeding up and maybe a slight whistle while cruising. if anything just turn the radio up to solve the issue of hearing the added noise.

I have not heard any noise increase after installing the cowl intake.

If I put my ear over the cowl opening I hear a slight hiss, otherwise nothing. The cowl intake mod is one of the best mods for the $.

I have the setup that runs to the passenger side with an inline cone filter. It is louder than stock but I ran it for two reasons:
1. Haven't ripped out the ABS system yet so the ABS block is against the left side fire wall
2. I needed the stock airbox space for a second battery and compressor.
If I had the option I would have done this mod instead.

Was this a Jab? I'm not sure. I don't get Canadian sarcasm sometimes. Please forgive me.

Hi Dukie,

Great write up. Just finished mine (prototype prior to paint).

I have also raised the rear of the bonnet to try and keep the monster (4.7L) cool (its the wrong side of 50c here in Abu Dhabi) and I may just suck in the same hot air I am trying to avoid! The main purpose of this mod is to try to prevent so much sand getting to the air filter (I use my XJ for dune bashing).

Nice clean install! Could you post up some pics of your XJ doing it's thing in the sand another thread?
