Default Jeep cherokee fender flares

Ok so I want to increase the amount of space in my wheel wells. I have a 4.5" lift and 33's. I don't have a lot of room to do anything. I've seen a ton of cherokees with the flares removed and trimmed, and I don't want to do that. I also don't want to dish out all the money for Bushwackers. Has anyone found any alternatives? Any DIY jobs? Need help!

Or you could cut your stock flares. I used this thread https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f58/cu...-flares-48847/ and cut mine. There is a link in that thread, post 50, that has better detail for the rear. I posted several pics on that thread, post 57 on pg 4, but here's a couple now.

Last pic is on about 2.5" of lift and 31's FYI.

Some people use lawn edging
Some use TJ flares
Some cut the stock flares and/or move them
Some use Napier Flares (cheaper than Bushwackers - and most say better)

I'd definitely do that but I have the 97-01 flares. They're different than the pre 97 flares.

Oh. Sorry. I didn't realize that. I think I read they're a bit smaller opening but figured the flares were similar. I looked at those Napier flat flares linked above and may go that route eventually when I get different wheels.

I'm going with Napier when I get around to it. Figure I'll get these, I'm over the "flat fender" look

Have you seen the Flat Flares in person, My buddy ordered them and I kept telling him they would look like crap, once I saw them on his XJ I quickly changed my mind and my decision what I was installing on my own Jeep.... They look much better in person than they do in photos...

Taller bump stops so you don't eat a tire on the body.

don't forget to cut and fold over the pinch seam that runs through the front wheel wells. Also, some, including myself have raised the front fender flares on the fender and re-drilled the mount holes. Located top of flare at body line on front fender. Rear flare can be raised however, not much maybe .5"

I have the exact same setup and am rubbing like crazy to. Interested to see what solution you decide to go with!

Quick question... Do the flat fender flares provide enough additional clearance? I have heard that they are significantly less than say the regular Bushwackers.
If OP is getting any rubbing like mine, he needs a lot more clearance lol

I have been doing alot of research on the flat flares both Napier and Bushwacker. I have seen guys be able to run 33s with good flex if you use the flat flares esp from Bushwacker. I also don't want to do much trimming, however the Bushwacker kit is straight forward and definitely gives more clearance. There is a youtube video if you search how to fit 33s on XJ with 3" lift.
