Default 4wheel drive problems

I just picked up a 91 with a 4.0HO and manual transmission. This is my first jeep and first car with 4x4. I'm having problems getting it to go into 4 low sometimes. Are there things I can check to make sure all the 4wheel drive components are working properly? Also are their vacuum lines I should check? Thanks

Check linkage at bottom of shifter to side of case for broken or missing bushings.

Shift like this:

Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual. The suggestions in CAPS are mine.

"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I LET OFF THE GAS, THROW THE LEVER, TAP THE GAS AND LET OFF.

4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".

TO SHIFT OUT OF 4L, SHIFT THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL WITH THE VEHICLE STOPPED, SHIFT THE TRANSFER CASE LEVER TO 2H, THEN THE TRANS TO D IF YOU HAVE AN AUTOMATIC, OR INTO FIRST GEAR WITH A MANUAL, AND CONTINUE ON.

Ya I have a problem when I'm trying to switch to 4low when I'm stuck and can't move, sometimes I'll put it in 4low and you can hear that it's not locking the front and it kind of grinds when I put it in gear and try and move

You are putting the transmission in N before you try to go 4low right?

Yes I was reading if you do it to quick that it won't engage so I always put it in neutral and slowly shift to 4low

Once the jeep is stuck, 4-Low can be difficult to engage without nudging jeep in one direction or another.

Ya that's what I was guessing. Just frustrating when you are completely stuck but I might have to invest in a front bumper and winch in case II can't put it in 4 wheel drive

just use 4wd before you get stuck. A lot cheaper.
