So I recently picked up a 1998 jeep Cherokee sport that was a police vehicle. It has a D35 in the rear, and I want to swap it for a 8.25(that's what my other 2 XJ's had). I have 3.55 gears, and I am a little confused as far as when I swap the axle, do I just buy matching gears for the 8.25? Or do a lot of them have 3.55 gears? Thank you for an advice.

 

If you are going to buy gears, save up and buy deeper gears that correspond to what tire size you are going to run. You should be able to find one that matches up though. Just pop the cover and spin them. Ring gear will be stamped.

 

Find a complete 8.25 with 3.55s in it. Any 4.0 with an auto trans should be correct.
