Default Heater hose question

what direction should the heater hoses be if you eliminate the heater control valve should the top run to the thermostat and bottom hose to the water pump or vice versa!! I have switched from a closed system to an open system.

Thanks snacks thats the way i got it but it seems like a tiny bit of coolant is either coming from my head gasket area which I just replaced.. or its coming ffrom my water pump but on the top of it though Ive changed everything HG,WP,T Stat Timing Chain, you name I changed. It seems like it over heats at idle when im driving seems alright, feels like I should have a little more power but what ever!! but the stop and go at lights it gets hot. IF I SHUT IT DOWN AND FIRE IT BACK UP WHILE ITS HOT iT SEEMS LIKE IT ALMOST MISSES sputtering till I give it some gas then its fine. Any help would be great

Heating up at idle can also be a sign of bad mechanical fan clutch.
