I know this has probably been talked about before and if it has please in the right direction.
Im wanting to wedge a diesel into my 93 XJ 4 door. The question i have is what is the best engine and trans setup to use. i want to stay automatic. Im also wondering what the estimated cost is to do this? If anyone has a build thread i would love to take a look. What all needs to be changed and what can i use or modify from my Jeep? This is going to happen this summer sometime. My Jeep has wiring and engine issues so it will get completely gutted and start fresh.

The Mercedes seems to be a popular swap. OM617?Originally Posted by NavyGuy11586

http://www.mercedesdiesel4x4.com/ but to keep the auto you will have to use a http://www.radesignsproducts.com/rail-controller.html or http://www.radesignsproducts.com/roc...r-shifter.html and manual shift the gears with that. But that diesel has no aftermarket parts and only made 80 hp 122 foot pounds of torque,The fastest 4.0 in the xj made 190hp and 225 foot pounds.A 4bt will be way to heavy and pricey to find anymore. There is a vw diesel swap kit kinda but only for a stick,To me for what the diesel swap cost i rather swap in a ls1 which you can get swap parts for.For the price and the power you get its hard to beat.

I have a friend that put a 4bt a 4L80E trans and not sure the transfer. But he had 7" lift and 37" tires. He reinforced the entire frame used Clayton long arm up front and leaf spring rear. He left NC headed for Texas pulling a 16" trailer loaded. Ran between 70 and 80 mph most the way had plenty of power and got an average of 28 mpg all the way. He had no problems not sure the cost but he says it's worth every penny.

If he wants a off road jeep a 4bt 750lbs same as a big block,That much weight in the front will make it nose heavy not a good idea.

The OM642 is a v6 you would have to make your own motor mounts your own adapter plate and flexplate.Honestly is you want a easy diesel swap look in to getting a 73-87 gm truck or a ford 96 and older.

The Non-Turbo made 80hp and 122ftlbs and the later turbo ones the OM617.951 and .952(82-85) both made 125hp and 180ftlbs of torque. Yes it's lower than the stock 4.0L gasser motor in our jeeps. but the torque curve is completely different. the torque curve for the OM617 starts at 1400rpm. where as the 4.0L I6's doesnt start til about 2400rpm. which is almost where the middle of the curve is for the 5cyl mercedes turbo diesel.Originally Posted by andrewmp6

It's a mechanical diesel there isnt very many parts to "hop up" you fiddle with the IP, put a bigger turbo on it, put a 3" down pipe, Intercooler etc. you can reliably make 200hp with 250-300ftlbs of torque.
I am going to be doing the OM617 swap on my 97 Cherokee, while keeping the automatic. and getting the RA designs shifter. i will also be eliminating the stock gauge cluster and running a custom designed one.

VW 1.9L TDI Turbo
This video helped make up my mind....oh... and I heard folks with getting around 40mpg. unfortunately it will be a couple of years before I am ready, but I wish I had the cash right now as I just saw a VW TDI 1.9L with a new motor and wrecked in the back for $1000 obo.

Mercedesdiesel4x4 does have the whole kit. Just looked it up yesterday and called today. They are not doing turn key swaps at the moment. Full swap price is 4500-6000. 4.5 inch lift required. Adapter plate to bolt to the ax15 Originally Posted by andrewmp6

, 4.56 gears with 31's or 33's. No reinforcing needed, just weld the mounts in. Haven't done it myself, yet. I start on this in a few weeks.CF Veteran
The price is why a lot of people never do a diesel swap,And the price they gave is if you do it all yourself. Now if you pay a shop to do it your looking double that i bet.

Mercedesdiesel4x4 is a shop lol. Not like your performance shop, the guy runs the business on the side. There sister company simpson jeep family wants 8-14k depending on the engine. I am here to confirm, 4500-6000 for turn key swap, accessories, kit and labor. Its posted on there website. I to thought it was something different. I called in and talked to them. It is 4500-6000, you will need a 4.5 lift. They will install at the same time, it does cost extra. If you have the lift already, turn key. Om617, $1000.. full swap kit in under $2000. You have to make your own engine mounts. Not reinforcement needed. Bolts right up to the ax15 using adapter. Ax15 clutch, and flywheel can be used. So other than that. There really isn't a super lot to it. This swap is a lot cheaper than people percieve it to be. If you can weld. For anyone with a long arm 4.5 lift or more, this swap can be done for 4000 or less. Not too expensive imo.Originally Posted by andrewmp6
