Muffler. But I took a look at it a few hours ago because I had a second to work on my jeep and I decided "**** it" and loosened the u bolts so I can rotate the muffler back into position (with a wood mallet because it was rusted to the exhaust pipe) and it's pretty much in the right position. The u bolts were pretty loose in the first place so I tightened them up a lot and now I am just keeping an eye out for a condensation leak because that's where the carbon monoxide would also come out (right?) but for now the leak is gone. When I was using the mallet I heard stuff in the muffler start to jingle about but like a lot of little pieces of stuff and after I finished with the muffler I turned on the jeep and revved it a bit and a ton of rust came out of the exhaust pipe I noticed (which would make sense because it was a neglected car) and the jingling in the muffler is nearly gone. So yeah. Hopefully problem solved

Default Stylin Cat Back System

Here is what I wound up doing for the wife's rig.

1 Walker SS Quiet-Flow muffler The Bay $65

Called AFE spoke with Scott (great service) and ordered just the 2.5 SS pipe for $140

Install local shop $60

Factory Quiet, Yes

No noticeable performance/mileage gains.

So $265 for a SS cat back exhaust installed. Everybody's Happy!

muffler won't help you pass smog. The chunks could've been the inside of your cat deteriorating which would cause smog problems.

I have a jeep Cherokee with a stock muffler... I want to make it louder and sound good but only want to replace the muffler... What muffler would you recommend?

thousands of options. Each has their own opinion, only you can really decide. Listen to YouTube videos.

So what if I take the muffler off to check if the cat is in good condition and rev it a bunch with the muffler off to blow out any debris?

well if debris is blowing out, that's the internals of your cat most likely, which means it would not be working correctly.

It passed the smog check last June and I haven't done anything that could damage it that I know of. The stuff that came out seems like it was from the muffler because the rust bits are curved like the sides of the muffler. And when I tapped on the muffler with the wood mallet to break the rust between the tailpipe and the muffler to adjust its position I started to hear the jingling of those pieces only in the muffler. I didn't use the mallet on the cat what so ever.

well you said spot welding it could help me pass smog, implying that you failed. If you didn't fail smog don't worry about it. But catalytic converters fail from just driving and using a vehicle

He is saying he will fail smog because you have to have a muffler of some type to pass. Smog is a relative term to passing emissions. Visually and figuratively.

I didn't have it smogged yet. My mechanic just warned me that I could fail. I completely forgot that if you fail the smog you don't have to pay to have it re-smogged once you get the issue fixed (unless it's failed the third smog also then you do have to pay again). I'll just leave it as is for now and see if it passes. Will update.

I have a muffler but I don't know that if it has condensation leaks at the u bolts could cause it to fail. I'll just go and find out without touching the exhaust anymore. Then go from there.

How much louder are you looking for? Are you wanting loud inside the jeep, or loud outside the jeep only?

For instance, I'm running a Thrush Turbo - cheap muffler (about 35 bucks) from local autoparts stores. It sounds great! Nice mellow growl at idle from outside and a low, but semi-aggressive tone from outside - almost like a small muffled diesel. Inside, it sounds like a stock muffled 8 cylinder. Not loud at all (Keep in mind, I have no carpet).

I'm going to be switching to a Flowmaster Super 40. Loud inside, loud outside, I've heard from some that it will drone on the inside at interstate speeds. Idle sounds like a small v8, aggressive sound at acceleration, but not obnoxiously loud at all.

What I had for a while was straight-piped exhaust. Loud everywhere, through idle, acceleration, and interstate speeds.... obnoxiously loud when you accelarate hard. Sounds like a cummins under normal acceleration.

Sidenote: My pipe from the downpipe back is 2.5"... I've heard other straight pipe exhausts using the factory diameter that sound like crap.

Hope this helps a little.

With the Thrush Turbo did you have a cat on it?
