I know that there are probably 1000's of combinations of exhaust systems for my xj but I want something slightly aggressive and affordable. I also want a warranty. I will not have the money for headers right now so should I get a catback system or a universal cat and muffler. I know a guy who can bend all the stainless for me and it will cost less than ordering it so can you give me some options to narrow things down. I do not like the sound of Borla, thought I should mention that. Thanks, from a blue collar dad working on my third jeep.

 

You don't need new pipes unless the ones you have are shot or you want to go to 2.5. I think stock 4.0 jeeps sound best with a Magnaflow. Stainless, has a good rumble, nice idle, gets loud if you want it to, no drone. They have a lifetime warranty, I got mine for $75.

Flowmasters and other chambered mufflers don't really need a warranty. There is basically nothing to go wrong in there as long as you don't let them rust. Depending on your jeep, they will probably drone pretty bad. A 40 series would probably be what your looking for. However, Flowmasters are way overpriced IMHO, a Thrush welded is a nice 40 series rip-off for $20. Hi temp paint it, you're good to go. I've used them on muscle cars, trucks, had one on my jeep. Cherry Bomb extreme ($30) if you want to be obnoxious.

Been doing some header shopping and have a quick question. I have an '00 with the "federal" exhaust setup (shorty manifold with no mini cats), can I just get a 99- header or do I need the 00-01 specific header? Again, not a CA jeep, no mini cats, header o2 ports are plugged from the factory.

 

Are you looking for a stock replacement or an upgrade? Depends if you have a 2 piece manifold or not for a replacement, although I'm pretty sure all 2000+ have that. For a performance header, a 99 one piece would probably be an upgrade in your case, if the mounting style is the same, or you could go with any header for a Cherokee. Most aftermarket headers will come with the all possible ports for emissions and will then include plugs.

The mounting style may or may not be different from the one piece to two piece and the exhaust past the header might also be different. From the looks of it you would have to change a good bit of your exhaust to fit an earlier header.

PS: Whatever you do have a small flex pipe put in behind the header to stop it cracking again.

We replaced our motor mounts and it pushed our engine forward almost an inch. We have a good aftermarket exhaust system that rumbles like a v8 and have had people ask if we put a v8 in, but now after the new motor mounts the exhaust does rattle against things under acceleration. but you cant see what it is because its only when the engine is under a load. We are going to try two additional exhaust hangers. What do you think ?

 

I was looking into buying a Borla header and cat-back exhaust system for my '92 XJ but when I look at the fitment info' it says for '93 and up XJs'. Is there a a big difference in the exhaust geometry from '92 to '93 or should I be okay?

My Muffler developed a crack around the incoming exhaust pipe and is generally rotted out. I am looking for an affordable cat back exhaust that basically is stock spec. I looked at the one on the first page of this thread, but it looked like I would need to weld a hanger on the tail pipe. I want a do it myself solution using basically a ratchet set.

I don't want a loud exhaust I have a 1 year old.

There is one on rock auto for like $142. Is it any good? Too loud?

 

If you don't want to do any welding, there are solutions at the auto parts store that will allow you to clamp a hanger virtually anywhere onto the exhaust pipe - no welding required. Usually between 5-10 bucks... IF you really liked the kit you mentioned on the first page and welding was the only thing standing in your way.

 

I got a dynomax superturbo from amazon and a walker tailpipe, both flowing better than slowmasters for under 100 total. unfortunately then my cat broke off in the front.

 

Ok, so I know that the stock exhaust pipe diameter is 2.25 inches but how does it work if I buy an 2.5 inch catback exhaust. Will there be any problems connecting the 2.5 inch muffler to the 2.5 inch cat? Also if I get a new cat that is 2.5 in/out will it still be able to connect to the down/front pipe which is 2.25 in diameter? Pretty confused about this...

 

You can go to any parts store and buy a 2.25" to 2.5" adapter. It should cost $5 or less.

 

I think on mine the muffler fit inside the cat, so there was no adapter needed, somehow it just fit together no problem.


I have a question now, I have a 99 with the two down pipes manifold. I want to rob the cat from it for my 97, but it is welded solid. Can I remove the complete thing from the manifold to the cat and install it on my 97? The pipe is bigger on the 99, how do the manifolds flow compared to the 97 style manifold? The cat is bigger on the 99 also, I had already planned on putting a 99+ intake on it. The 97 manifold looks better , but the two piece has to be better.
