Yes, its all about back pressure. There is no point in running a straight pipe on a 4.0. High flow cat and a good muffler is the way to go

 

Some meth heads stole the cat off my XJ Sunday night.

Is there a bolt in test pipe available that bolts to factory flanges? My guess is that if i put another cat on it, it'll get stolen again in a couple weeks.

IF there's a test pipe available, will this have any negative effects on how it runs?

would it possible to weld the new one on there? i mean since you are havin that kinda issue with your neighborhood. Hook up a motion sensor light overhangin above your ususal parkin place(driveway or garage etc.) that will fool their meth rotted brains for a lil longer.

 

ok. i didnt know that. i knew back pressure was what it was all about but i suppose straight back piping is really only uased for the sound which a magna flow muffler could produce or the right exhaust tip.

 

Exactly. My buddy runs no cat/muffler on his trail beater and it sounds like ****. A muffler makes a 4.0 sound better.

 

Dont get me wrong i agree. but i do have to admit if you get it right with a straight back, then the deep roar sounds kinda cool. but i would rather it be a smoother sound instead of the choppy **** my 90 2door had.

plus with a straightback you lose gas mileage i guess. I was barely gettin like 5mpg. it felt like i go down the block and i would lose like a quarter of a tank.
Im glad that my 86 doesnt have a straightback. it still has a great sound to it tho.
My old dodge ram charger had fantastic sound. it had that deep smooooth roar to it that could be heard for a quarter of a mile around.
i miss that old truck..

 

Cat converters are worth a fair bit of money as scrap.

Sure, i can have a new one welded on there, but it's going to cost in the $150-$200 area when all is said and done, and i 1) don't really have that kind of extra cash, and 2) it'll just get stolen again.

If i can get a bolt in test pipe, i can just install it myself and it won't get stolen.

Or if anyone is in Indy, i'll throw anyone $50 to weld in a piece of straight pipe.

 

lol yeah but if its welded in they will have to cut it out. which will cause a fair bit of noise. plenty of time for you to wake up, grab a gun and scare em off.
but yeah go with the test pipe. I know this doesnt help you any but you could try lookin at local exhaust shops. Ussually they are hidden away in some corner plaza of town.

 

Being welded in didn't help me much on Sunday night. They cut it. It's waaaayyyy faster to just hit an exhaust pipe with a battery power sawzall than it is to unbolt 4 nuts that have been heat-cycled eleventy-billion times.

If i was a crook, i could pull up to your jeep overnight in my car, cut the cat off, and be out of your driveway in less than 1 minute.

I've called a few shops, and nobody's touching it except to put another cat in. Not really an option at this point.

 

lol well. that really sucks. Well yeah cuz they dont want to risk gettin in trouble with the State about smog violations. Try ajunkyard or some local highschool auto calss shops. or the college ones. ussually the professors and highschool autpo teachers will be more understandin. (i recommend college ones tho cuz they are more likely to know what your lookin for and be more willing to go thru with it)

 

No emissions or inspection in this state, luckily. My daily driver has a 3" exhaust straight off my turbo out the side of my front bumper. Been driving it for over 3 years and haven't been hassled about it.

 

OK I'm looking into getting the performance curve exhaust kit. Should I get the flow master 40, 44, or 50. Or should I get a magnaflow

 

I am having issues with what sounds like a vacuum leak. It gets worse/louder as I accelerate. I also have lost about 5mph in each given gear range before I am revved out and ready to shift. On the freeway, I bog a little on uphill grades, and seem to hit about 55-65mph in 5th gear. Pulling bigger hills thankfully is on surface streets where the speeds aren't so high. I still bog under the load though. I have recently put my exhaust back together, but it was really a patch job reattaching the original components. I have 184,000 and change on the clock. Does this sound like a plugged up cat?
