Alright! I am absolutely confused. I have been going over threads for days... back and forth and back again. I am in the market for a muffler and not sure what to get. I have gotten down to the Super 44 or 40. Some threads say one is louder than the other, others say the other is louder. Does anyone have any on hand experience between the two? Or are they really just the same loudness and one is just a little quieter from the cab? I am sitting here w/ both of them in a shopping cart waiting to figure out which one to buy before I throw down my cc info. I only want to buy one... not both haha.

Just installed a banks monster muffler yesterday. Very nice sound. Zero drone unlike slow masters. I have had bad luck with thrush and flowmasters.
So.. I don't think I have a cracked header, but I'm all about getting all I can out of my 4.0 with 156k miles. I've got upgraded injectors, a CAI, and a 2.5" magnaflow catback (from mudfrog).
I think my next big purchase is a banks header. Can someone help me with this. I want to buy all the parts I need and have a shop weld my whole setup together. So... I want to get it right when I piece together the header, downpipe, flexpipe, and cat. I believe those are the parts I'll need, please correct me if I am wrong.
So? Suggestions? Banks header to downpipe (need to find downpipe that's mandrel bent, if possible)
That goes to flexpipe? there are a variety of options, length?
Which Cat will work best and sound best with the magnaflow 2.5" catback?
Any other considerations? Should I replace O2's?
Ya'll rock. I'll be reading up as best I can.

damn - struggling to find a thread about an exhaust overhaul. reading alot about precats and how if you don't have them you throw codes.
Maybe I'll just prive the custom build at an exhaust shop. I like to save money, but piecing together parts seems.. daunting.
I'll keep reading and I'd might as well replace O2's. Thanks!
pm'ed mudfrog, we'll see what he offers.

It sounds, more and more, like I should probably buy the header, cat, and O2 sensors... install the header and trailer it to an exhaust shop, then let them make a downpipe, provide flexpipe, and weld it all together.
I don't want to have to pay to install the header, so I'll save cash on the install and purchasing the cat. That might be about it for savings.

IIRC the downpipe made by Banks for the TJ's will work. My last XJ had a full Banks setup installed already when I purchased it, including the downpipe. Routing is a smidgen different, no big issues really. Only PITA is changing the oil, as the TJ downpipe routes about an inch away from the drain-plug. Doesn't block it entirely as it's a bit lower than the plug, so A) you must use a box-end instead of a socket/ratchet and B) oil drains over the downpipe (doesn't splatter everywhere, still a nice stream), so you'll smoke a little bit until it burns off. Other than those two, I was happy with it.
Currently my exhaust setup is a Banks header (pricey but happy with it), custom-bent my own downpipe out of 2.25", a hi-flow Magnaflow cat ($63 IIRC), and 2.5" out the back dumped over the rear axle, no muffler.

Well what type of sound are you looking for? Id just go to an exhaust shop and ask for a section with a 45° bend (mandrel preferably) and tweak with the tip at home till it sounds right. I don't have any experience with exhaust though Haha you'll need someone else to help you out. If you think about it, the longer your tailpipe the deeper the tone. Then depending on the angle of your pipe and the angle of the cut you can change how much it resonates. Yay physics!
