If you really want a good sounding muffler get a borla. Flowmasters are well made and sound good, but on a 4.0 they all sound about the same

don't expect that slapping a flowmaster on will make it sound the best in its own. Without significant cash, you can get a 2.25" magnaflow high flow cat, then go 2.5" flowmaster (super 10 is what I am going do) the a 2.5" or maybe a little larger turndown tip.

Spintech 9000 with 2.5" pipe. Nice deep sound on an XJ.

Currently waiting to be installed: magnaflow muffler and 2.5" mandrel bent TP from performance curve. (Also have a fairly new cat installed... we'll get to that in the later part).

I want to put all 2.5" mandrel bent pipe from the collector back. I plan on getting the mandrel bends in a kit from somewhere like Summit (other source suggestions welcome). I also have access to someone with great welding ability and all the proper equipment for the price of a six pack.

What do I need to connect the 2.25" collector to a 2.5" downpipe? Should I weld everything together, or use some clamps? I would like to make it somewhat modular using clamps in a couple of places to remove sections for maintenance. I have seen a band-type clamp that looks ideal, but I cannot remember what it is called. Is flexpipe a good preventative measure somewhere on the downpipe? My goal is to have this tucked up tight to the underbody above the rail.

One consideration is that this is a 2wd that will get a 4x4 conversion at some point. Should I just follow the stock setup for the downpipe? I don't want to interfere with the front DS when it is installed.

As for the cat, it is a 2.25" OEM replacement about 1.5 years old with all of 1500 miles on it. Should I replace this at the same time or just roll with it?

Sorry for the long winded questions! Thanks in advance!
I had mine tucked up tight and it melted my carpet on a 4.5 hour drive going 80

Sooo -- I should get a 2 1/4 down pipe made and step it back up to 2.5" at flexpipe or after the converter? Does it matter. Looking at banks+custom downpipe+flex+cat+weld existing magnaflow catback. I was going to go 2.5 the whole way, but every thread I check on with banks headers, people have a 2.25 downpipe and step it up to 2.5 somewhere along the way. I assume this is to preserve backpressure.

edit: Funny - I had this quick reply open for like 20 mins, came back and someone had a similar post above.. kind of. Will follow.. And thanks!

I was wondering what a super 10 sounds like

YouTube videos suck and I was wondering if it is really to loud. It says on the website it's to loud for the street but doesn't seem loud in videos. Does anyone have one and can contribute some advice. I have some kind if flow master now and it's sounds good on takeoff and just sounds plain and boring while cruising.

videos hardly ever do exhaust sytems justice.

I have stock header, walker down pipe without the pre-cat silencer. its 2 1/4". then i have a performance curve high flow 2.5" cat with a performance curve 2.5" flowmaster super 44 c/b. i love the sound. borla is a great muffler but out of my price range. my.2cents worth.

Borla's mufflers have the same straight through style as a MagnaFlow and Xlerator. They should all sound about the same but at a cheaper price than Borla.
