In a 96 you should only have 2. The upstream is like $50

If you can afford quality spacers, you can afford new wheels. That would be advised for anything larger than a 28" tire to prevent rubbing on the Lower Control Arms when turning. 31s are common at 3", but you can fit 33s if you do some fender trimming.

Yes, but they'll rub at full turn. Check out jegs, about $200 for steel 15" wheels w/ free shipping. Spacers will run you about $120 for a decent set.

Default axle upgrades for lift

i have heard if i am going over 33" tires i should upgrade my axles .... ???? any suggestions as to size etc also transfer case??? planning a decent size lift in the near future ....sorry very new to this

links would be awesome especially if theyre somewhat inexpensive (in comparison to most) while maintaining quality

You can fit 33's without cutting just bump stop it, and add a washer to your steering stops

Stock axles will be ok on 33's and 35's will be pushing it. Gas mileage will suck and you won't have any power in comparison to stock.

All you said was transfer case with three question marks, so what does that mean?

What size are you planning lifting too?

Depends what axle youre running. If you have a Dana tirdy5 (D35) in the rear then it may be a good idea depending on what youre doing. If its a DD I wouldnt worry about it. Right now. You can always upgrade to a Chrysler 8.25 or a Ford 8.8 down the road. But more than anything you need to worry about your gearing and Im going to assume you an auto so you would have 3.55s so I would recommend sticking with 31's for the best performance over all. Is there a reason you have to 33's? And how big is a decent sized lift? What are talking here?

Why is there a hole in the diff cover at the junkyard? My buddy and I have pulled two XJ Dana 44s in the last year and both have what look like bullet holes in the cover.

On a slightly different note. I wrote a little program to search for 87 XJs at all the yards in SF area. I've look at every one in the past 6 months and about 20% have Dana 44s. They're not that hard to find if you check the inventory once a week. At least in my area, but I also only see 4-door automatics here too.

Last question. How do you clean an axle. The one I just got must have came from a car with an oil leak. I tried a high pressure washer and that worked some but still coated with a layer of oil-gunk.
