Arrow '96 XJ engine to '97-'01 XJ

So I have a '96 manual 2 door Cherokee - and it is a rust bucket.. and I recently found a '97-'01 automatic 2 door Cherokee for very cheap, that body has next to no rust on it. I will be converting the '97+ into a manual and then scrapping the '96.

What will need to be done to convert the body to accommodate the clutch pedal? And what should I do to the engine while I have it out - it has 188k on it so I don't plan on doing anything crazy to it. But what gaskets, seals, sensors are a good idea to replace while it's out?

Then I will rebuild the broken engine (into a stroker perhaps) while it's out sitting around over the next few years in prep for the one with 188k to give up. Assuming the block is good etc etc.

Will I need a transmission mount from the donor vehicle or from the new vehicle? I would like to order it prior to the swap and want to make sure the AX15 is on properly!

I will be using this thread to go into detail on the differences of the two and my process for the engine swap.

I know you have to drill out the mount holes for everything for the 5 speed pedals. Pcm needs swapped to a manual trans one that works for a 97. I don't know if your 96 would work.

A lot of what I have read is that you are better off to buy a cherokee that is already a 5 speed then trying to convert one.

While you motor is out you should change the manifold if it is cracked. New oil filter adapter gasket, valve cover gasket and grommets, distributor gasket, rear main gasket if any have never been changed.

Here is a good thread: https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/97-...-85847/index2/

I have an entire donor vehicle. I could swap the entire wiring harness to the donor engine if I have to

I am almost done with my engine swap I will update this thread in a few weeks to include all of the pictures and parts required.

I am curious as to what I should do for the wiring harness as the transmission had a plug going back to it, I may just dummy rig it to think the transmission is still there instead of going with the other PCM as I am not having any luck finding one. If it's just a CEL it can wait because it won't bother me too much. I'll see if my 96 PCM works as the 3 main grey/white/black plugs all match between the two models.
