1996 is a tricky year, with the body and fittings of the 95 and older models, with the OBD2 computer of the 97 and newer models, along with some special 96 only bits thrown in for flavor.
1995 and older had two temp probes. First is a sensor on the tstat housing for the ECM, and the second is the temp sender on the head for the temp gauge/light on the instrument cluster. 1997 and newer models use only 1 temp sensor on the tstat housing for the ECM, with the ECM controlling the temp gauge/light. I'm not sure which method is used on the 1996.
It's also possible that the head was replaced with a newer one that lacks the temp sender port. 7120 has a port, while 0630 doesn't.

Well, what I did today was let the registration slip and expire on the Heep. I'll do it online tomorrow and have new tags next week.
Still got the studded tires on it, so it's not legal now anyway. Got a few days to get that done now

Vehicle inspection. Passed. Wasn't worried about emissions but I currently have some pretty good drive line vibes that I haven't been able to address yet. I was worried they may not pass it for that. Temp tags were expiring. Now getting plates.
Replaced the drivers "door check" (dang those things are expensive). Wasn't as big a deal as I thought it might be, but it was sorta like closing the barn door after the horse ran away as now I still have to fix the cracked hinge weld from over opening
Worst part is the door hinge was fine when we got it 3 weeks ago. I didn't notice the door check not working at the dealer's lot which was flat. I got it home and thought "oh, that is a nuisance but I will fix it later." Bad Dobby

They drive the jeep around?
No. They put it on a dyno. It's really an emissions inspection but theoretically they can legally fail you for things like fluid leaks, vibrations, and some other stuff. Not sure how often that happens. First time I've had to do this kind of inspection since CO started doing them this way.
