Default Talk me out of getting rid of it

'95 XJ still runs and drives, just kind of waiting for something to go wrong - and I'm tempted to just get a new XJ or maybe a Wrangler even. With 246K, I don't have the slightest of clue where to start if I wanted to prevent issues, as I'm not loaded and only get about 120$/week from PetSmart.

Just replaced the Valve cover gasket, and TPS

Need to fix trans mount (I think that's the feverish tapping under my foot while under a load), do some rust repair on the underbody

Other than that, I'm not sure where to start to just make it last, or how long it'll be until I need to replace something major.

KEEP ME OFF CRAIGSLIST

well if you don't have the money to put into this one how in da hell are you gonna be able to BUY another one.

Just keep it and keep up on it. start doin all the pm stuff. tune-up, front and rear diff fluid change. T-case fluid change. antifreeze flush.

just start at the front end and work ur way back. Does she run good now?

No matter what you buy, it will need work.

Suck it up cup cake...jk..lol

^ What he said. You'd have to work for MONTHS to even consider having enough money to buy another one.

You're not going to get enough out of it to make it worth your while. Plus the next XJ (or anything for that matter) you get could also have problems.

Stick with what you got. Keep fixing it and maintaining it.

My 91 has 314k on it. They last.

Try YEARS! 120 a week!?! I make more than that in a day after taxes. Stay in school and learn a career that will pay you what you're worth.

i'm guessing he's going to sell his XJ and use the $$ from the sale to buy the other car. guys who make that kinda scratch don't exactly have big down pyaments typically.

Keep the XJ and do what i did. $20 a week goes to XJ parts. need a $60 part, 3 weeks later it's in you hands. wanna buy some spray paint, put the change in the XJ jar and next week add anther $20 to it. in the course of a year you can have over $1000 of new parts in your truck. Or i'll give you $1000 cash for that nice clean looking 4 door. besides 246K you still have a ways to go befor she's toast.

Haha, I forgot to put where I was, I'm in PA - the closest "city" is Allentown.

As simple as it sounds, I like the idea of just saving a bit each week and putting it towards parts... Can't believe I didn't think of that one earlier.

Bettler,

There's a lot of good advice coming to you from the veterans of Jeepdom. At best I can only echo their sentiments but feel the need to chime-in anyway.
Not that it matters much but are you the original owner?
Has your old friend ever really let you down?

Money's tight but your immediate short-term need appears to be only a trans mount.
If you strap it down (ugly) and nurse it (by gently squeezing the go pedal) then you can still get around. It worked for me for a couple months (and I was a nervous wreck about it) while I gathered the scratch to do all 3 mounts at once (2 were broken), because my time was also at a premium.

I wouldn't normally suggest this (nor should I) but one other option would be to grab a used one for the time being - maybe from a local trans shop or pick-a-part.

Don't be a "fair-weather friend" to your XJ and don't buy somebody else's problem. In your current situation, you're far better off with the "devil that you know".
