Default RV towing

Hi --we are looking to tow-- four wheel down a very basic Cherokee 1987 and up). Must be a 4 x 4
Couple of questions: does it have to be a standard/manual trans?
Does it have to be one with manual hubs?
We want a very basic unit--manual roll up windows etc
Looking for advise on which year to buy, we have never four wheel down towed before.
Thanks in advance for any advise
Regards
Dick

Look for 91-99 cherokees as far was towing it can be done but best to read the owners manual to do it.And either trans can be towed so thats up to you which you get.And the xj never came with locking hubs but their is aftermarket kits if you want them. The last jeep with locking hubs was the fsj aka the grand wagoneer/j truck types.

i would even narrow it down to any jeep after 96 just for the cost of maint and easier diagnosis for repairs. but whatever you choose putting the transfer case in neutral will allow you to tow your jeep safely but be sure to go through and double check the owners manual.

yes check the owner's manual.. even a rv place may have a list of vehicles you can tow 4 wheels down..

some you'll have to stop every so many miles and start and run the vehicle for so long to re-lubricate things. others say not to tow 4 wheels down at all.. better find out for sure before spending any money..

The XJ Cherokee was towable since it's release. That's with all 4 wheels on the ground.
No year limits at all.

Transfer case in Neutral. Auto trans in P. Manual trans in any forward gear.

E-Z to flat tow any Cherokee but it must be 4WD which you already stated. I flat towed my '90 Cherokee and now pull my '97 Grand Cherokee behind my motorhome.
No other requirements or special stuff like manual hubs. Can be manual trans or auto.
After you hook up the hitch, put the Transfer case in Neutral, turn the key one notch so the steering wheel is unlocked and can freely turn but not to to the On position. Put the trans in Park for auto or any forward gear for manual. Parking brake off.
Do you plan to use an aux braking system?

Dang! Cruiser beat me to it while I was typing.

whatever you do, don't put a jeep on a 2 wheel car dolly, unless you pull the rear drive shaft.

everyone has already mentioned, t-case in neutral, transmission in park/gear and key one click forward.

I have pulled my XJ a 99 with auto trans, 4.0 engine many miles behind our motorhome. But in recent yrs. if we plan on going 4 wheeling trip somewhere and staying in the motorhome we tow it on our car trailer in case we break something a long ways from home. That way we know we can get it home without worry.

Im 4-5 hours outside the blackhills S.D. trails so i prefer trailer myself. the 2 trails an hour away i even get worried wheeling at, broke my passenger lower control arm in my zj there and had to limp it 15 mph all the way home.

At the owners option, you may purchase and install a mopar wiring assist kit (p/n 68321424AB) from your dealership and have it installed. This kit provides a fuse and switch to flip "on" when flat-towing. It provides power to the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) control system. Without it, you risk serious death wobble and front end suspension damage that FCA states may not be covered by warranty without this kit installed.
