Default Axle Questons from a Newbie

I have a stock 2000 XJ sport which i plan on lifting in the near future to take it trail riding. I checked my axles and im pretty sure i have 2 Chrysler 8.25s. Wondering if thats good or bad for off roading. Thanks guys!

When you say that you have 2 Chrysler 8.25s, are you referring to the front and rear or do you also have a spare rear axle?

You have a low pinion Dana30 up front.

The rear could be a Dana 35 or the Chrysler 8.25. If it is the 8.25 then it will be the 29 spilne version which is a very good axle.

Could possible be a high pinion D30 depending on the build date. Some of the earlier models in the production run have the high pinion.

This should help a little. The 8.25 is easily identified by the flat section on the bottom of the axle housing.

This is the difference in low pinion and high pinion. The low pinion D30 is on the left. It is a reference to the location of the pinion gear in relation to the centerline of the axle. Low being below the centerline and high being above.

No, the front is a Dana30 just like posted earlier. A dana 35 is a rear axle.

Everything I've seen says 00 and 01 are lp only.

It follows the same logic that all the official specs list the 27 spline 8.25 through the 96 model year and all 97 and up are 29 spline. We already know that there are late production 96s with the 29 spline axles. I can't remember who but there is a member on here that has a very early production 00 that he purchased new and the front axle is a high pinion and has not been swapped out.
