i guess i should have clarified, i have yet to be ticketed for the tires, but i have become a conscious big rig owner.... last time i came out of a trail my tires tagged up a parked car.... and having stuff launched into your face and cab while running door-less is not that awesome... but an update on mine..... got one of the rear brackets finished and then muffed the "flare" up so im waitin to get some more material(s)

Now that I think about it.... What is the purpose of flares? They protect the tip of the tires. Even if the argument was "keeps people from being thrown under the vehicle....." if it is high enough, it will still happen... I gotta research the thoughts about this.

I get to go back to the person, who told me it's for the safety of pedestrians, and call them an idiot. It's a highway act that basically warns about "weather spray". So, I guess in sunny weather it is fine?!?!?!?

I would say its more to protect against rocks and debris from possibly getting tossed in the air... and ofcourse, coming back down

It's basically to reduce the rocks/debris that would fling form your tires just like the 18 wheelers are required to have mudflaps for the same reason. Not that you will stop it 100% but it helps.

 

You know, I wonder whether or not you use common sense in some of your comments. By your logic, seatbelts are unnecessary because (a tiny percentage of) people have been trapped by seatbelts in an accident. Or auto insurance is a waste because the vast majority of drivers never acyally need it. Dude, safety precautions & requirements like mud flaps, flares - and insurance - are there to help reduce the likelihood & extent of damage & injury ... NOT to 100% eliminate them.

Actually, in 2003, a lady mad a wrong turn on a local highway. She did not see a county officer driving up the highway at 50 mph. Being the Jersey Divide was lower than a curb, most people take the chance in damaging their car. Well, she was t-boned, spun a few times before striking a pole. Had she HAD her seatbelt on, my crew would have been waiting for a pronouncement. She lived because the force applied sent her into the passenger seat before striking that pole. I know in my area, we have county and local street sweepers. That's why I said that. Most of the states I have visited, the only rocks or pebbles are from road repairs. In addition to that accident, I had a triple decapitation. All three died because the seat belt restricted the force of lateral and forward motion. They head was able to more. They were stopped at a light behind other cars, as an on coming car struct them after losing control. Route 46 Bridge between Ridgefield Park and Little Ferry. So, using the seat belt one is only for head on accidents to keep people from being thrown through the windshield or sliding under the dash with certain types of seats. With air bag deployments, seat belts are secondary. Most times, it's the air bag that stars windshields.

For your statement to be valid on the XJ's shown here, then the height of the vehicles will throw rocks. But don't tired go from bottom to top with a backwards spray? Meaning road debris is usually between the thread and the road. If it came from the top, it would break taillights and rear glass? Simply saying the statement made by the National highway transportation safety department on flares is flawed?? When I peeled out in my Jeep on roads with a stock height jeep, rocks still went over cars. And it's the front tires. Maybe I will a revise to the NHTSA on lateral covers on 18 wheelers.

By the way, if that was an argument on flares, then everyone above a 3 inch height is unsafe and would need mud flaps!
