Yup! I'm with them! Gutter rails are much stronger.

My rack is mounted to the stock rails. It holds me with no problem and held the driver's side of my Cherokee off the bottom of a ditch when we rolled it (attached). Before we pushed it back on the wheels, it was over 90 degrees supported on the driver's side by the wheels and the roof rack against a pine tree.

1 pint of power steering fluid: $2.50
2 fuses: $1.00
knowing that your roof rack saved your windows, body work and paint job: worth $1000
Smiling all the way to FL and back the next day because I own a Jeep: priceless

There was a guy on this forum that used to carry his spare on a roof-rack mounted basket. The inertia of the tire moving around when he was on the trail caused the rails to pull right out. When I pulled my headliner a month ago, I saw what was holding the roof rails on and now know why, they are rated to 200-some pounds....gutters all the way
