After you remove your front bumper, you need to make the mounting plates. to do that, rimove all the bolts including your power steering pump bolts and then cut a piece of cardboard the shape you want and hold it steady and use the ball on a ball peen hammer to tap the cardboard where the bolt holes are. this will cut the cardboard around the edges of the bolt holes and when you are done you can draw out the shape and exact location of the bolt holes then cut and drill the plate. 1/4" is preferred.

Yeah you can use a mig welder. You would want to use tube for the structure of your bumper, since you want to build a tube bumper. I would use 1 1/2x.120 DOM preferably but HREW is okay too.

saw a pic of one on the web...and did the copy thing when I built mine.
THese were my specs: 1/8th inch square tubing with a pre-runner style light guard out of 1 3/4" tubes. No winch mount yet (but will be able to retro fit) cause I don't have one YET. 2-2" clevis mounts.
My neighbor has a chainlink fence and custom driveway gates company and let me use his pipe bender, plasma and welder to build these. AND gave me scraps to use for the bumper..

I can't remember where I got this from but everything lines up on my XJ except for the two formost holes in the front. They were off by about 1/2 inch. I just made mine 26 inch overall to have something to work off of.
Hope that help.

Thanks....it can be done even with the least of skills...I'm far from a fabricator, but with the right equipment and (like me) patience when you screw up(...like 3-4 times) I found it pretty easy in the end
