Technically its from the dumpster.
But your correct, they were previously on a HMMWV. I have no idea why some unit decided to throw these away and since I refuse to let my tax dollars go to waste...
Figured I'd drag them out of the dumpster and see if I can re-purpose them. Honestly, they are WAY to overkill as they are for anything smaller than a HMMWV. Even if you were running 37s on a Jeep you wouldn't need so much overbuilding like these are. Not sure if they are built like that to allow for the truck being air dropped or what? But I'd bet each one weights about 80-100lbs not including the tire! The good thing is they use a super stout spindle assembly and all the rotational points are fitted with zerts to grease them. I plan on looking at them, maybe tearing one apart, and seeing how I can either make it MUCH lighter or just reuse the good parts and scrap the overkill. I'll take pics when I come up with something.

The sad fact is I have asked around, called FW&A (fraud, waste, and abuse) as well as talked to the Provost marshal about what I have commonly seen being thrown away. Your 100% correct that much of it is likely some unit(s) being lazy and failing to properly dispose of it through DRMO. Seems that unless it falls under HazMat, and sometimes even then, people just don't care anymore. But there is another side to this equation... the civilian contractors. Most of the major repair work here (and most posts too I'm sure) is performed by MAV and staffed by civilian mechs. and its not uncommon for there to be a procedural disconnect.
Then there is the great other 500lb gorilla.... Since we both likely came in around the same time (1990), you remember how OPSEC was such a big deal? I'm not sure what happened but we always used to get briefings about properly disposing of documents, training material, even clothing. You would be shocked and saddened by how the standards of that have slid. And remember how it was always important to note and report people digging through trash or taking photos etc? HA! That's almost laughable here! My first couple weeks here I must have caught a couple dozen locals digging through the dumpsters in the barracks. Think anything was done? Nope. They were told not to do it and I had it explained that since the Joe's throw out so much useful stuff (appliances, computer, or stereo type stuff) that the locals will always dig for it. Doesn't make it right but I think we are far from where we as a military need to be. Hopefully this down size will help put us back on track....
Phew... that was kinda an off topic rant.. Sorry all!

Here's the rear bumper for my WJ that we just got done building. Obviously not ground down or anything yet. If you look close you can see where we had to recess the middle of the new bumper for the tail gate to lie down and the handle not hit. Also I really like how the bumper rounds up in the corners around the tail gate to match the contour line of the bottom of the tail gate. It's only 1/8th in steel but the Hitch will be mounted back on underneath to the uni-body which is where I will need the strength.

Ok Guys, I got the back bumper built which is in the pic above. Now to the front bumper. Was wondering if I would be ahead to make the front bumper with a hitch in it and mount my winch on a plate that goes into the hitch so I could move it from front to back or is that not good and I should directly mount the winch to the bumper and not be concerned with the back? Not to sure which way to go with this. Suggestions please.

Sometimes the only way out is to back out and a winch permanently mounted on the front will not work in that application.

You got any ideas of the plans you are gonna use yet? I haven't decided yet but need to make sure it is gonna be strong enough to hold up.
I am holding off until I build my shop and have a place for my welder and other tools/equipment (recently sold my house and am in another house with no garage).

Just finished my version of a DIY easy bumper. It has a winch plate, tow hooks and it's all welded to Rocksolid's bumper brackets.

Since I have two XJs in need of bumpers I'm gonna try and make two as I go along. Hopefully I don't just end up with twice the wasted steel.... But it has begun!
