zj transfercase swap
i just bought my first jeep its a 98 jeep zj limited with the 5.2 and it has the np 249 transfer case in it. to my knowldge the dont make a cv driveshaft for this transfer case when you lift it 3.5 and up i also under stand if u sawp it with the np 242 you will have vibration on the cv drive shaft if so is there any way to get rid of the vibration? and what transfercase should i go with before lifting it 4.5 inches?

Swap it out with the NP231 or NP242. I would go with the NP231 and do an S.Y.E . kit and a one inch transfer case drop if your if your really worried about it. FYI if you swap out your transfer case to a NP231 you will have to change your input shaft on your transfer case. I did it its not that bad.

Ok I was wondering what else u needed to do to the np231 t case by doin that you would lose the all wheel drive I would keep it that way if it didn't cause a vibration on th cv driveshaft. With the np231 wouldn't u have to put new lockers in or no?

The NP231 doesn't have an AWD but the NP242 does and I thought about doing the whole locker thing but with the right tires and t case you would be shocked at what a jeep can do. But if you what a locker just go with a loc right locker there cheap and easy to put in.

you dont really have to worry about vibes with ZJ's like you do with XJ's.
I am at 3" with a 242 swap and I still have the front CV shaft for now and I have no vibes.
also, dont do a TC drop, you are doing nothing but losing clearance.
ZJ's also have u joint front shafts, find one from a JY and take the yoke too and swap it out if you want, since the POS CV shaft will eventually fail.

just a heads up, I was at pull a part up in arlington yesterday and they had two ZJ's there with 242's in them. they were older so probably a pre-95 gear cut which would require a front case swap. but they are the same length as the 249 so no new driveshaft needed.

I realize this is an older thread but I thought it would be appropriate to post here.
I have a 96 grand Cherokee with the 249 as well and want to do the swap. Is the 242 the better choice and what parts do I need to do the swap?

Gentlemen, check out this link; http://jeepforum.com/forum/f13/trans...-np242-685644/. It will give you all the info you need to know.
BTW, the 231 t/case's 4WD selections are part time only.
