Default Transfer case...

I would like to swap my NP249(fulltime 4wd HI\LO) for the NP242, for the variable Differential settings.

I have a 98 ZJ 5.2L AT. 4"lift
Mostly for DD, with occasional off road use, mud and trails. No rock climbing.

All of the 242TC I find online, are from 4.0 and whatever tranny.

My question is what challenges\complications should i expect with this swap? or is it as simple as the connecting mount between the tranny and the TC?
Just buy the converter\adapter plate?

My NP249 is running great, i just think the daily drivability would be more comfortable, as well as better fuel mileage.

thanks for your help in advance.

Basically it's just a matter of matching the t/case input shaft internal spline count. Go to http://jeepforum.com/forum/f13/trans...-np242-685644/ for all the info you'll need.

thanks.

i have that very page bookmarked from my searches on this forum.

its a great read, but my problem like I said, is all the NP242's on Ebay, etc. are labeled for 4.0L. What transmission spline count do I have on my 3speed +OD and which TC do I need to match it?

Would it be best to just buy any decent TC, and an SYE with the correct spline count?

Also, is there really any advantages to the drive options of the 242 over the 249? i dont really mind the all time 4wd, i am just assuming it would be better for daily use.

Anyone with this swap, I would love to hear your opinions, and how its doing after xx,xxx miles.

The whole point is the 6 cylinders use the 42re trans and the V8s use the 46re or rh trans so the output shaft splines are different. Therefore the t/case input shafts have to be changed to match the transmission.

Also, if you expect to get better fuel mileage with 2wd, forget it. It ain't gonna happen. Your still spinning all those gears up front weither you've got power on them or not.
