Default Towing a travel camper with a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

Looking for the best recommendations on what to buy/ brand to buy to tow a travel camper under 4,000 lbs on the back on my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Any advice will help!

There is a recall on your jeep for a trailer hitch installation to fulfill a requirement of the NTSB for crash protection. The Mopar hitch is a thru-the-bumper hitch and puts the ball at a good height for most common trailers. I have a U-Haul hitch on mine and in order to pull anything but a small utility trailer it needs a gooseneck to get the ball up where it needs to be. I only put the hitch on to provide a rear recovery point if I put it in a ditch.

I would recommend the Mopar hitch, but to get it free, you may need to jump thru some hoops. You can buy the kit and install it yourself if you want. The kit comes with a template for cutting the plastic bumper and a bezel to cover the area that's cut out. You can even install a trailer plug in the bezel. It's also going to require a lighting module to convert the jeep 6-light system to the 4-light one on trailers. You can get those from Mopar or aftermarket.

Jeeps with the "tow package" have a trailer hitch, lighting module, aux trans cooler, and 3.73 axle gearing. It is recommended to keep O/D locked out when towing to reduce the heat buildup in the transmission. Keep in mind your jeep weighs 4000 lbs itself. If you're going to be towing a lot, I would recommend a trans cooler.
