Default Tcase

I have a 97 zj with selec trac and my issue is my tcase is stuck in 4pt, I've checked my linkage and it's moving freely. I'm at a loss for what could be wrong with it, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome to CF!

When you say it's moving freely, does it feel like it's connected to something or just slopping around? Try moving the shift lever on the side of the t/case itself and see if you can get it back to 2wd. It could just be a broken shift fork.

Okay, there are nylon "slipper" shoes on the shifter forks and they may have disintegrated allowing it to not shift fully. Try slamming it into 2wd and see if it will engage that way. My 242 will pop out of 2wd if you don't shift it "smartly." There are so many selections in a 242 that the shift collar doesn't have to move much between positions. You say it's stuck in 4pt, can you get any other positions to work? I should have asked that first.

Shift lever will move through all positions but you can tell she's stuck in part time

Actually both of my Jeeps do this. My 4.0 does it any time I use 4wd and the 4.7 just did it for the first time the other day. I did get the light off by going all the way to 4low and slamming it forward hard. Probably not a recommend method but it worked in that case.

With mine it's just the light on the dash being on though cause the thing WILL spin the rears only. Thats the 4.0, haven't tested the 4.7 with that method either. Just know the light was on the other day after putting it in 2wd and I just popped it into 4 then back to 2

My lights off but you can feel the tires popping over in turns that's the only way I can tell she's stuck in 4

Oh damn, then maybe a linkage issue. the sensor that turns the light off may be triggered by a different part than whats sending the info to the transfer case. I did see something on this subject online because I was worried about the fact that mine was stuck with the light on in 2wd. There's something that's vertical on top of the tc that was said to be the issue with mine but Idk if Its the same thing you're having a issue with. I can poke around online a bit more tomorrow at the garage and see if I can find a link to send your way to try helping to figure this out for you.

Good idea. That way, no chance to happen again. Good thinking on jacking it all the way up and trying to disengage
