T Case Leak or Normal?

Default T Case Leak or Normal?

I hate to beat a simple thing in the ground. This issue with the Tcase spraying fluid. I replaced the breather cap on the rubber breather hose in the engine compartment as that is the solution via owners experience and a TSB. I disconnected the hose from the breather tube and blew into it to make sure the hose was not clogged. I replaced that rubber plug in the tail end. Its still spraying fluid, like right above the rear seal and front U Joint yoke. Its a contained area. There is just this fine spray of fluid spread on the underside of the Jeep in a semi-arch about 8-12" wide. Its not dripping, more like a sheen. It's not blowing back the length of the car. It is not the rear seal leaking. That is dry. Everything is dry except underneath. I can't be under the car when its moving, so I can't tell where its coming from. From what I can tell it has not lowered the level of the fluid in the Tcase significantly. The level is still just slightly lower than the fill hole. I have not checked the metal breather tube to see if it was clogged. I guess I could stick a pipe cleaner in it, but why would that get clogged?

That is odd... I want to ask for a picture, but IDK what that would do to help if everything is dry. Do check the "OIL-SLINGER" between the yoke and the tail shaft. Oil will seep past the actual seal, and then centrifugal force spins it around and "slings" the oil onto the floor pans. May be a bad Rear Output seal, only leaking under pressure/rotation

Not sure what a "oil slinger" is. I can't find any part called an oil slinger. Is it that thing that resembles a harmonic balancer right behind the driveshaft yoke? The oil does look like it is being "flung" . The pattern looks like it coincides with the rotation of the driveshaft. Nothing is dripping or weeping from anywhere. What the heck does an oil sling do? This is a NV247 by the way.

output shaft bearing, etc. It is hard to inspect, but use a knife or sharp pick covered with a cloth or napkin and check for oil. While your doing it, wipe it clean/dry(on the inside edge) and recheck it later after a drive.

I was able to determine that the NV247 has a oil pump. No oil slinger. Thanks.

I had that issue once. For me, it was a cheap fix. The TC had an inner seal go bad. Had to drop the TC, split it, replace seal. 3 hour job at most.

It was a seal in the case, or a seal inside the case?

Of course it has an oil pump. But the oil slinger is separate. The slinger is an external part. The attached pic shows the dust cap removed. Beneath it is the oil slinger followed by the bearing.

Thats what I was told by a rebuilder of these cases. And I was unable to locate a listing for this oil slinger part attached to a 247. I saw them for sale for 242 and other cases, but not this one. That photo is not of a 247. Correct? So the slinger is behind the rear seal. If so then the real seal should be wet even if it is flinging the oil upwards?

Correct. Random google pic, probably not a 247. Its possible it were designed without one. Either way, IF it were the cause of your oil spray-pattern, it would be a leaking seal/bearing. If you can check that the bearing is dry/not leaking, then I'm out of ideas.

You may have a plugged t/case vent causing thermal expansion forcing the fluid out.

I changed the vent cap and made sure the vent hose was not blocked. I haven't checked to see if the metal vent tube is blocked. I REALLY don't want to take out the T Case just to check it.

Take out the fill plug and blow some air thru the vent pipe. Actually visa-versa so you don't blow any crap into the case.
