Transfer case noise, normal?
I have the NP242, when I'm in 2wd I never hear anything. But in 4wd Part time and 4wd Full time I hear a whirring noise, perhaps somewhat similar to a worn transmission input bearing. I heard something similar on my old CJ when I had it in 4wd. Is this somewhat normal?
Also is my front drivetrain always turning in 2wd, there is no vacuum disconnect on my XJ right? That was on the older models? So my front u-joints would all have the same wear as the rear driveshaft u-joints.
I noticed something weird today, I was driving in deep snow in 4wd part time when I had to reverse and the light turned off. It still felt like it was in 4wd and the light came back on after getting going again forwards. What gives?

How's the oil level and condition? Might have a bit of chain stretch going on. Or a marginal driveshaft joint somewhere.
I have a different transfer case, 231, but it's silent in 4WD. You are correct the front axle still turns in 2WD, there just isn't power applied to it.
That indicator light commonly gets flaky when the switch (in the transfer case) gets sticky.

Level is full and only changed the fluid a few thousand kms ago. Might dump and fill again for fun. Chain stretch would make sense, I have about 300,000kms on my XJ.
I felt each U-joint for play, all of them feel tight. My thought would be that if they are rotating all the time as the front does not disconnect, it would have the noise in 2wd if U-joints?
Can I pull the switch out and clean it up?
Thanks

You'd think it would work that way, but sometimes they only make noise when power is applied, other times only when they're freewheeling. Mine fronts squeak a bit when I turn in 2WD but are dead silent in 4WD. I'm too lazy lately to replace them, lol. I know, I know....
You could try cleaning the switch with some sort of solvent, working it manually, but it's a $15 part...I just toss them.

Ah, okay. Thanks for the info! I figure more likely the front driveshaft U-joints if I hear the noise closer to me in my seat? Rather than the axle shafts?
Cheers
