Default Overhead Console Question

Right now I just have the dome light pod in the middle of the headliner. I know some of the JGC came with the overhead console. Is it a simple upgrade or do they use completely different mounting? My dome light set up is all busted so I figure why not upgrade since I'm changing it anyways.

Thanks in advance,
Miles

I thought about doing this too but I heard they're a royal pain to change over but that doesn't mean it can't be done. I just didn't want to go through the trouble have not work correctly or something like that

Yeah I know what you mean. If it's just like cutting a hole in the headliner board or something stupid like that that should be no problem. If it's that there are missing brackets behind the headliner then that's another story.

Don't forget about the necessary wiring harness. It runs down thru the windshield pillar.

Actually, on my WJ, I mostly use the compass and OAT. (temp). The system is integrated into the entire sensor system so it's not a simple thing to install. Mine has a bunch of functions and is programmable in 5 languages as well as metric.

I was mostly looking for the added map lights and extra storage. The electronics working would just be a plus.

Oh! Yeah! My bad! My 97 ZJ had one without the readout and had maplights and storage for sunglasses and a garage door opener. That one would probably not be difficult to fit. That one had lighted vanity mirrors so the harness would probably be there.

Just a bit of trivia; Did you know that the reason the Dodge Caravan sold so well was the fact that it was the first American car to have lighted vanity mirrors ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE! Soccer moms, here we come!

Well I went out to pick-n-pull and grabbed an overhead console, Complete wire harness for it, Mounting bracket, & the temp sensor from the front of the jeep. As well as some other misc trim pieces that were in better shape than mine. All from a 94 made the same month as mine. I hope it's all plug & play from this point. Down side is I have to be much more careful installing it compared to when I was removing it lol. I'll keep you all posted. I think I may takes pics as I do it and make a write up. Before I install it I will hook up all the wires and make sure it all functions before I go hacking up my headliner.

I will say I was very nice at the junk yard. All the parts I removed that I did not need I made sure they were intact & usable. I placed them all in the back seat most of the jeeps there were trashed and everything inside was broken from people tearing them apart.

Be careful how you talk about soccer moms. My WJ was owned by a soccer mom and that's why it is in so good a condition. Anything went wrong, it went straight to a mechanic. She even put the same tires on it that came from the factory! First thing I replaced, BTW.

Sunday I went back and grabbed the mirror that I forgot to get while I was there. Stupid me. Plugged it all in to the harness to check it and everything seems to work great. That's a good sign lol Now I just need to figure out the best way to cut the headliner holes.

Go back to the yard and trace the holes in the donor jeep using the mirror as a center point. Transfer the trace onto your headliner and then use an X-acto knife.

Well Got it mostly installed. One problem I ran in to is I was hoping the wires for the temp sensor would be present on the front of the jeep. This does not seem to be the case. Does anyone know what wires from the overhead console are for the temp sensor? Or where/what color the wires are on the front of the jeep?

Thanks,
Miles
