Okay, from just a couple of minutes with a search engine, I've found the 2.7 crd is a 5 cylinder turbocharged in-line engine built by Mercedes.

The whole point of that response was to show you how easy it is to do your own research! I'm not going to spoon feed you. Only you can decide weither it's worth buying or not.

Sorry, I guess I over reacted a little. The major problem is in America they don't let us play with diesels too much and until recently not in jeeps. I couldn't find any information about the internals myself. I just learned today that crd means "common rail diesel" whatever that means. Mercedes has been building diesel cars since the 50's so I'm assuming they know what they are doing. They were the first to use a DPF or diesel particulate filter to clean up the exhaust. Knowing Merc, it's probably gear drive.
I'm very good with petrol engines, but don't have any diesel experience at all. Besides that, I'm just a grumpy old man!
From what I can tell, it's dual chain drive. One for intake and one for exhaust. I found a cutaway diagram.

The diesel wj was for export only so us americans have never seen one and have no idea about them.Dave common rail has a fuel rail on it think of it like a multi port injection efi.The older diesels used a injection pump which is kinda like a mechanical fuel injection.A common rail has a ecu while a injection pump don't.

Yeah, the only diesel I ever worked on was an older 250 Cummins with mechanical injectors. They were actuated by a rocker arm. IDK how they were metered. All I did was take them off an engine, helping a buddy.
My Grandpappy said "Any day you don't learn something is a day wasted." The only thing I know about diesels is the compression is high enough to ignite the fuel just from the heat and glow plugs warm the incoming air for starting.

The injection pump is ran off a gear off the timing gears and has to be timed right. Is nice when its right but a nightmare when its not.And the injection pump does have a fuel mix screw like a carb but its under a protective cover you gotta pray off it.The 7.3 powerstroke is common rail but the fuel psi is based off the oil psi so you run it low on oil or none its gonna run funny or not at all.The direct injection you hear about new in the gas engines is old in the diesel world,And not all diesels run glow plugs some of the cummins use a intake gride heater in the intake.

the only issue with that engine mate is the chain guides on the lower half of the block on the right lower side, the guide pins break causing the chain the flutter on startup, before long it jumps a tooth and dings a valve...other than that they are a straight arrow of an engine.
