Default Ignition and starting problems

I recently acquired a 1994 Cherokee V8 5.2. I picked it up yesterday and drove it home. everything was doing fine, I even stopped at a gas station. I took it home and went out to show my brother and that's when I discovered the problem. I noticed the light ring around the ignition was still on ( no key in the ignition) and there was this clicking coming from the passenger side underneath the dash. And when I put the key in and turned it to the accessory position, all the lights turned on and the clicking stopped. I tried turning it over but nothing happened and it started clicking again. I thought the battery was dead so I tried jumping it but that didn't do anything. I just don't know where to begin trying to fix this problem. any tips, tricks, or suggestions are greatly appreciated!!
