Default Help Identifying Axle

What is the best way to identify an axle when the tag is missing? I have a 98 zj, 4.0 and the axle is shot and needs replaced. However the tag is missing and the previous owner painted it red. Are there other ways to ID the axle, or what is the best way to do it?

Just look at the differential cover. Google search the differential cover chart and save it for future reference.

For future reference and if someone searches this:
ALL 93-95 ZJs had a Dana 30 front (if 4x4) and a Dana 35 rear.
ALL 96-98 ZJs with the 4.0L engine came with Dana 30 front axles (if 4x4) and Dana 35 rear.
96-98 ZJs with the 5.2L or in 1998 5.9L engines came with the Dana 30 front and Dana 44A rear (aluminum center section).

Some came with limited slip in the rear.

95 saw the introduction of the d44a. Some V8s came with it some did not.

96-97 4.0s also saw a disc brake version of the c8.25. Rare but was used as the supply of the d35 was low.

GENERALLY SPEAKING, the ZJs came with 3.55 gearing standard and 3.73 with the tow package. HOWEVER, gearing was a build option by original purchaser. To be sure, you've got to pull the cover and count teeth.

Your local Jeep dealer should be able to look up the original build info if you give them the VIN number, which will include the axle ratios... if it's still stock.

You can also go on the jeep website, and go to the contact us page. And fill it out. Put your VIN in. And tell them u want a build sheet. I got mine emailed to me in just a few hours.

The D35 cover is completely round like a dish.
