Front Diff breather - Help

The best one I've seen was a 4 ft baking tray, but that got stolen. My Dad used kitty-litter. I was usually the one who swept it up!

I have noticed an axle tube breather hose, from the left side of my rear axle, near the brake lines.
It is routed to a fitting in the floor of my trunk, beneath the vehicle. Just curious as why.

It's mounted as high as possible to prevent water from entering the diff. They figure you won't go deep enough to flood the cabin, will you?
