Default Front Diff breather - Help

All,

This maybe a stupid question but here gose..
On the rear of the Front Diff is a breather pipe (Black Rubber Hose) dose the other end connect to anywhere or is the hose just routed up in to the engine bay. I fond mine trailling under the engine on the road and woyld like to either reconnect it or route back up in to the engine bay, but where?

Thanks in advance..

Markie.

it routes back up to the side of your air box, just mounts on the side of it (facing down)

It's just a vent tube, doesn't "connect" to anything. Route it up in the engine bay so water won't get into it

You know I always wondered the same thing. Mine has a plastic plug in the end of it sealing it off. Was like that when I bought it, noticed it when I saw that, that hose had dry rotted and broke in half. When I replaced the hose I pulled that plastic plug and capped off the new hose.

Question, if its a vent hose then it shouldn't be sealed off should it? The plastic plug looks like an OEM Chrystler part but who knows. Should I remove it?

I often wondered the same thing, when I bought mine I noticed that hose had dry rotted and snapped in half, so I bought another 3 feet of hose and replaced it. In doing so I noticed a plastic insert/plug thing capping the end of the original hose. It looks like an OEM part so I pulled it out and capped off the new hose with it. But it never really made any sense to me to have a sealed off hose routed into the engine bay.

If it is a vent then that plug shouldn't be in that hose should it? Anyone else have a plug in theirs?

(hope this isn't a duplicated reply)

That piece that looks like a plug still lets the axle vent. Isn't there a piece on the top of it that spins? I think thats their attempt at an anti back flo valve.

Default Hose coming from front differential - what is it/ how to replace.

Hello, this is my first post...hope I'm doing it right.

Basically, I found part of a hose on the ground and located where it broke off...the other part is still attached to my differential I think - or very close to it; hard to see even with a flashlight.

Attached is a picture...any idea what this is and how to replace it? I found a couple of posts that might be accurate...they say it's a "breather" hose connected to my diff but I'm not sure how to replace it. Thanks!

All it does is vent the axle, but is run high enough so water doesn't get into the dif when you "wade" in water, like going thru a stream or a flooded road. The rear axle should have one as well that just leads up into the frame above the fuel tank. You can end it anywhere you want it to. Without this vent, pressure from heat will cause the axle seals to leak. The front axle grease seals are inside next to the carrier bearings and are a PITA to replace.

Cool, thanks, here's a close up btw just to doublecheck...so how do I fix it - is any tubing of the same diameter? What of the plastic thing on the end...seems to fit somewhere...I'm new and have no idea where to buy parts - prefer to buy online but can go to a junkyard I guess...

You can use any hose that's oil safe. Pure rubber hose will swell and get gummy. That plastic piece is the breather and looks like it has a boss on it to slip over a bolt to hold it in place somewhere. This is not rocket science and anything will work. You can even leave the upper end open as long as it's pointed down so water can't fill it up.

The problem I'm having with my WJ is snow-pack keeps pulling the fitting out of the differential. It's only a pressed in plastic fitting. I may have to thread the hole and put a brass fitting in it. The hole is right at the top of the dif housing on the rear side closest to the wheel. You should be able to feel it with your pinky-finger or find the fitting. If the hose just got ripped off, you may want to put a hose clamp on the new one. Don't crank it down or you'll crush the fitting.

Default Thanks for the Help

Thanks for the help...I'll have to fix that when I get a chance. Since I don't drive in water hardly ever it's not a priority...the leak coming from my transmission pan gasket and a leak coming from the transfer case (I believe it's called) that's about a foot from the transmission pan towards the back of the vehicle...

I'll check out the other thread topics, but any tips on working on these? I found a pretty good site: wjjeeps.com!!

The best trans pan gasket is a Mopar reusable one you can get from a dealer. I've changed the fluid twice and used the same gasket and it's still not leaking.
