If you're talking about a clutch fan, the problem is self explanatory. Replace it. BEFORE it comes apart!

On my 4.0 ZJ it was a failing water pump. There was enough movement of the belt pulley that it rubbed against the timing cover making the metal rubbing sound.

On my 97 4.0 the water pump was making a rattling sound and there was so much looseness in the shaft bearing that the impeller was hitting the cylinder barrel inside. When I replaced it, there was a bright ring marked on the barrel where it was hitting it. THAT'S why I like steel impellers on my pumps.

As I originally said, it's probably the fan clutch. This is not uncommon, especially in the bitter cold. What I did with my Chevy truck was mount an ordinary mechanical fan. There must be someway to lock the viscous clutch part of the fan for now.
