when i went to pick up the car i had to wait a little while until they had finished there final checks anyhow a rep walked in to the office. he began talking to the workshop manager about a new product he was promotting of which could be injected into the a/c gas system & aparently would fix small leaks in the a/c system & in a few days if they were no bigger than a specified size.
then you return with the car the tech checks the leaks fixed & regases to top up the system. i think the whole job at that time was only going to cost $150.00. next time i'm there i'll ask if they went ahead & used this stuff & if it worked. i'll post if its any good.
The aircon specialist I normally see for my cars mentioned that this sort of product exists but was fairly skeptical about it being a solution for a grand cherokee evap core; reason being that the cores he's done in the past have shown so much degradation that nothing short of a replacement would fix them.Originally Posted by projoe

I have a '97 Jeep Cherokee Sport. I tried to charge my a/c today. Everything was going great, until I was finished. After turning the engine off, I could hear a hissing sound coming from under the dash. From under the hood, it sounds like it is coming from behind the firewall. I have been reading the posts on the site and it looks like I may have a bad a/c evaporator. Does anyone have any detailed instructions/tips/tricks on how to replace it? My Chilton manual is no help. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Looks like I may have a long weekend ahead of me.

Yeah, that's a good write-up. You don't really have to pull the steering column though.Originally Posted by Lyon

Hi All,
Seems like I might have the same issue. Filled the system with dye, but system is now empty, with no sign of where the dye went. Have been told that it sounds like the evap needs replaced, but would like to confirm somehow.
Also, if it does, does anyone have specifics/docs for a 1994 Grand Cherokee Laredo 6Cyl/4.0L?
Two more questions:
1) What else should I just go ahead and replace while I'm in there? Heater core? Foam? Hose clips/clamps? Trying to build a parts list in advance. Any other consumables? Saw a mention of PAG100 oil; unsure what or how that is used.
2) Trying to understand what specialty tools I'm going to need. Sounds like, at the very least, an A/C disconnect tool.
Thanks so much in advance,
- Lynn

1). It's a good time to replace the heater core, and the accumulator. The oil goes in the system after you've put it all back together and pulled it down with a vacuum pump to make sure it holds a vacuum and doesn't leak. Then install the oil and freon.

Thank you sir -- very helpful.
To others reading the thread, any help regarding specific clamps or foam replacement part numbers that I may need would be extremely helpful. Also, I see many posts not to go with cheap (read: crappy) parts. Are there specific brands that you'd recommend using? Right now, my game plan is to go to Advance and have them start digging through diagrams...
As always, thank you for the help!

I understand that the freon gets circulated through the system, but I'm confused about exactly where the oil goes. Maybe it'll be more obvious once I have the things in-hand; just don't understand where it physically gets put at the moment...The oil goes in the system after you've put it all back together and pulled it down with a vacuum pump to make sure it holds a vacuum and doesn't leak. Hello I am new to the club after I found this great thread on the AC coil. I have a 2001 XJ that the coil just went bad. Could I get the write up? I have been a jeeper for years I will never drive anything else. Also do you think it is best to replace the heater coil at the same time? I appriciate any assistance.

I'd replace the heater core while it's all apart if it were me.
